Melania Trump petition continues to surge in popularity – CBS News

The petition calls for her to either move to the White House or personally pay for her New York City security expenses.“

The U.S. taxpayer is paying an exorbitant amount of money to protect the First Lady in Trump Tower, located in New York City,” the petition reads. “As to help relieve the national debt, this expense yields no positive results for the nation and should be cut from being funded.”

….Last month, the Secret Service requested $60 million in additional funding to protect the president and his family, according to a report in the Washington Post.

…As a private citizen, before he formally entered politics, Donald Trump was fiercely critical of then-President Obama’s travel and expenses.

I’d love for someone to post  running tally of the costs the Trump family are incurring and display it clearly next to the rate sof spending by their predecessors for the last fifty years.

This Is Almost Certainly James Comey’s Twitter Account

Digital security and its discontents—from Hillary Clinton’s emails to ransomware to Tor hacks—is in many ways one of the chief concerns of the contemporary FBI. So it makes sense that the bureau’s director, James Comey, would dip his toe into the digital torrent with a Twitter account. It also makes sense, given Comey’s high profile, that he would want that Twitter account to be a secret from the world, lest his follows and favs be scrubbed for clues about what the feds are up to. What is somewhat surprising, however, is that it only took me about four hours of sleuthing to find Comey’s account, which is not protected.

Jason Chaffetz: The Pimp of Oversight

If this is not quite the attitude you’re hoping to see in a designated Washington watchdog, you aren’t alone. Chaffetz has spent much of the Trump presidency thus far taking flak for his apparent partisanship. In just the past month, he has been booed off the stage by constituents at a town-hall meeting, had his office flooded with angry phone calls after saying on CNN that poor Americans could afford health insurance if they simply didn’t buy the latest iPhone, and found himself embroiled in a public feud with comedian Rosie O’Donnell. At home in Utah, he faces an increasingly well-funded and concerted campaign to unseat him next year, complete with a dedicated super PAC and a cast of challengers from both right and left. Their common case against Chaffetz boils down to hypocrisy: How can the same guy who was champing at the bit to expose President Clinton’s sins now justify giving Trump a pass?

GOP rep: Nunes ‘answers to the president’

Rep. Ted Yoho (R-Fla.) on Thursday defended House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes’s (R-Calif.) decision to brief President Trump on claims that members of his transition team were incidentally surveilled by the intelligence community, saying that Nunes answers to the president.

“You’ve got to keep in mind who he works for,” Yoho said during an interview on MSNBC. “He works for the president, and he answers to the president.”

Muslim men need to understand that the Quran says they should observe hijab first, not women

Islam places the primary responsibility of observing hijab not on women – but on men. It’s critical to understand this point.

People often conflate “hijab” and “headscarf”. Wearing the headscarf is one form of hijab, but men often forget that hijab is much more. And at the genesis of the hijab discussion, the Quran commands men to not stare at women and to not be promiscuous. The Quran 24:31 obliges men to observe modesty: “Say to the believing men that they restrain their eyes and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Surely, Allah is well aware of what they do.”

…This point was again illustrated when the Prophet rode with his companion Al Fadl bin Abbas. A woman described as strikingly beautiful approached the Prophet to seek his guidance on some religious matters. Al Fadl began to stare at her because of her beauty.

Noting this, the Prophet Muhammad did not scold the woman for dressing immodestly or revealing her beauty. Instead, he “reached his hand backwards, catching Al Fadl’s chin, and turned his face to the other side so that he would not gaze at her”. Thus, the Prophet Muhammad once more established that the primary burden to observe hijab rests on men.

An anti-abortion bill being offered by Republicans in Iowa would effectively ban all abortions and give parents rights over the bodies of unmarried adult daughters.

Lawmaker’s ‘peculiar midnight run’ endangers Trump-Russia inquiry

The House intelligence committee investigation of the Trump campaign’s alleged links with Moscow looks in danger of unravelling as a result of the unexplained behaviour of its chairman, Devin Nunes, a former Trump adviser.James Comey: Democrat by birth, Republican by trade, thorn in the side of both.

….Such behaviour reportedly includes an unexplained disappearance from an Uber ride with a staffer on Tuesday night, described by his Democratic counterpart as a “peculiar midnight run”.

…The investigation subsequently appeared to stall, with Nunes calling off a critical hearing scheduled for Tuesday 28 March, at a time when his Democratic counterpart on the committee, Adam Schiff, said he had seen more than circumstantial evidence of collusion between the Trump camp and Russia.

….Nunes has been under scrutiny over the past week for other reasons. He is reported to have gone missing on Tuesday night, under mysterious circumstances. The Daily Beast reported that Nunes received a message on his phone while travelling in a Uber car with a senior committee staffer in Washington, and then left the car abruptly without telling the staffer where he was going.

The next day he called a press conference, without telling his senior staff what he was going to say, and announced that he had seen “dozens” of intelligence reports that showed US intelligence agencies had “incidentally collected” material on members of the Trump transition team.

….Nunes did not share the intelligence material he claimed to have seen with Democratic members of his committee, and instead outraged them further by briefing Trump. He said later: “I had a duty and obligation to tell him because, as you know, he’s taking a lot of heat in the news media.”

Nunes feels a duty and obligation to his President but apparently not his country. When the treason charges do start to come down, methinks he will be at the front of the line of those who will be implicated, charged, and convicted.

‘There’s a cover up going on here’: Carl Bernstein spells out why GOP won’t investigate Trump

“There’s a cover up going on here among those who work in the Trump campaign and associates of Trump,” said Bernstein. “They’ve been concealing these contacts, which revolve around leaked emails from Podesta’s account.”

…He added that the Trump team appears to be attempting to “keep away from what really happened here” raising a whole set of other questions.

The Balkans: Bad News Rising

Does this political instability, which is often related to ethnic rivalries, mean that the region needs new territorial solutions? Or does it mean that the problem is political, in that brain drain and demographic decline has simply left these countries in the hands of opportunists, fools or criminals unwilling and incapable of delivering a European future. It is the latter: new borders leave the same people calling the shots.

Forty-one years ago, the US took in Vietnamese refugees and it was a good thing

Of course, today’s refugee crisis is very different from the southeast Asian migration of the 1970s. There are far more countries, causes, and powers involved today, and the nearly 5 million (and counting) Syrian refugees alone far outnumber the 1.3 million who left Vietnam.

All the same, as Greece turns away Syrian migrants, its Balkan neighbors close their borders, and thousands of asylum-seekers die at sea, it’s worth remembering that decades ago, despite widespread public opposition and xenophobia, a country opened its doors to those seeking safe, dry land. And they, in turn, left a lasting mark on a new home

Outraged mother speaks out on son’s thorough TSA pat down at Dallas airport

Outraged mother speaks out on son’s thorough TSA pat down at Dallas airport – CBS News

It really appears that the the underpaid, under-trained folks at the TSA harbor a lot of power-hungry incompetents.

They don’t find things they should, they harass innocent people and -from a security of view- perhaps worst of all they keep masses of people lined up and in place BEFORE screening, basically creating a huge target for anyone wanting to disrupt the airport with violence.

Can’t we bring a little sanity -not to mention effectiveness- to the process? Or is this country too stupid to figure out a way to actually keep ourselves safe while respecting the basic humanity of others?
