Montenegro: We’re too small to start a new world war

…US President Donald Trump suggested this week that this tiny Balkan country could be the crucible for a new global conflict.

Montenegro begs to differ.

“We have no intentions whatsoever to start World War III, we are too small for that,” the country’s foreign minister, Srdjan Darmanovic, told CNN in an exclusive interview. “It was fun to hear about it, actually like a good joke, but we are a very peaceful nation.”

…The newest NATO member was thrown into the spotlight when Trump described its people as “very aggressive.”

…Carlson questioned why the US should have to defend Montenegro, as required by Article 5 of the NATO treaty.

Trump responded: “I’ve asked the same question. Montenegro is a tiny country with very strong people. … They are very strong people. They are very aggressive people, they may get aggressive, and congratulations, you are in World War III.”

…Montenegro joined NATO in 2017. Its membership bid was opposed by Russia, which maintains close relationships with neighboring Serbia. The Montenegrin government accuses Moscow of orchestrating a coup as part of an effort to prevent it joining NATO.

U.S. gathering on religious freedom sets up competing narratives

The gathering gives Trump a high-wattage spotlight for showing his pro-Christian bona fides to the evangelical voters who helped him win the Oval Office. But it also gives the president’s critics a platform to assail what they see as his hypocrisy on human rights, especially when it comes to Muslims, whom Trump once proposed banning from U.S. soil.

…According to a State Department staffer, countries that managed to snag seats include Bahrain and Hungary, whose governments have been accused of hostility toward some religious groups. In Bahrain, Shiite Muslims, many of whom are opposition activists, have faced crackdowns by the Sunni-led monarchy. Hungary’s increasingly autocratic ruling party has faced a backlash over a law stripping recognition from a range of religious groups.

…The State Department staffer said that Russia and Turkey, whose religious-rights records have been increasingly problematic, were left off the invite list. The staffer added that administration officials hoped to highlight in particular the religious abuses by the government of Iran, an Islamist-led country that the Trump administration has singled out for pressure to the point where analysts say it is effectively aiming for regime change.

On the civil-society front, the administration is taking an inclusive approach: Invitees range from atheists to Scientologists, according to the State Department staffer. Representatives of more broad-based organizations, such as Human Rights Watch, are also on the list. Many are hosting side events.

…Trump ….avoids church.

Oldest Greek Fragment of Homer Discovered on Clay Tablet

The epics of the Greek poet Homer, The Iliad and The Odyssey, have been recited around campfires and scrutinized by students for 2,800 years, if not longer.

…It’s believed that The Odyssey and The Iliad come from an oral storytelling tradition. Whether the stories were composed by a blind poet named Homer is a source of debate, though many researchers believe Homer was probably not a historical individual but a cultural tradition that developed the stories over many decades or centuries, with scribes writing them down sometime around the 8th century B.C.

Body of ‘witch’ tormented by villagers 1,600 years ago found buried with one-hand tied behind back

The woman was found face down with her left hand fixed behind her back – a position hat was apparently used in witch burials to ensure that they do not return from the dead and haunt the villagers.

It is thought that she was the lover of a wealthy man, who would have blamed her ‘magic powers’ as the reason behind his adultery. This accusation would have been the cause of her torture by the villagers.

…Most women accused of witchcraft tended to be older yet occasionally young women found themselves accused of witchcraft, usually if they ended up in relationships with the wrong man or even if they had been sexually abused by a man of influence.

…This woman lived in times of the Chernyakhov culture. Her grave differs from burial traditions that existed in this area in the third and fourth centuries AD.”

The Chernyakhov culture is an archaeological culture that flourished between the 2nd and 5th centuries AD in a wide area of Eastern Europe, specifically in what is now Ukraine, Romania, Moldova and parts of Belarus.

Castro proposes changes to Constitution, including term limits for president, gay marriage

Raúl Castro is proposing a new constitution that would limit the age of future presidents to 60 at the start of their first terms.

The constitutional reforms, discussed Saturday by the Cuban parliament, also would erase the word “Communism” from the document and open the way for same-sex marriage, according to official TV broadcasts of the gathering.

…The official web page Cubadebate also reported Saturday that the new constitution would define marriage as “the consensual union between two people, regardless of gender.” That’s been one of the demands by LGBTI groups on the island and Raúl Castro’s daughter, Mariela, who heads a sex education center in Havana.

…The president will continue to be elected by parliament and not directly by voters — a change that many Cubans wanted.

And the new constitution will recognize private property but “retains the essential principles of socialist ownership by the people over the basic means of production and central planning as a principal component,” according to the official Granma newspaper.

Syrian refugees cling to life on Golan Heights as Assad’s net tightens

The displaced are trapped at the edges of this corner of Syria, where three countries meet. Jordan, to the south, says it already hosts more than a million displaced people and cannot accommodate any more. Israel, too, has said it will not allow any refugees to cross, despite urgent calls by humanitarian agencies saying their safety is at risk. Part of its refusal is an unwillingness to tip a demographic balance in a majority Jewish state, where about a fifth of the population is Arab.

…Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights was not recognised internationally and it remains in a state of war with Syria, meaning Syrians who seek Israeli treatment are at risk when they go back. Ziv hospital makes sure not to identify them, and discharge papers are written in Arabic and English, with no visible Hebrew.

White House removed Putin support for Trump from official video, transcript

Te White House had appeared to delete a question about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s support for President Trump in an official video of the leaders’ joint press conference in Helsinki, Finland.

The U.S. government is essentially following the Kremlin’s playbook.”

…The Atlantic was the first news outlet to point out the differences. Maddow added that the Russian government’s transcript from the event nixes Mason’s question completely.

Ivanka Trump to shut down fashion company

Ivanka Trump’s company saw an increase in profits in early 2017 after her father’s presidential win, according to a person with direct knowledge. But since that gain, profits have declined, the source added.

…Nordstrom isn’t the only retailer to distance itself from the brand.

The company that owns TJ Maxx and Marshalls decided to no longer promote the brand in stores, and earlier this month, Hudson’s Bay, one of Canada’s largest department stores, chose to phase out Ivanka Trump products, according to company spokeswoman Tiffany Bourré.

…The government watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington called the news that Ivanka Trump will be shutting down her company “a notable step in the right direction,” but added that it “comes much too late.”

…Ivanka is expected to address her company’s staff on Tuesday in New York, according to a source with knowledge of her decision-making process. The same source said 18 people will be affected by the company shutting down.

Albany Home Depot employee turns down offer for old job

Social media exploded over the weekend with the story about the Albany man who was fired from the Home Depot on Central Avenue because he didn’t seek a manager’s help in dealing with a customer’s racist rant.

Home Depot has since offered Maurice Rucker his old job back. His response — thanks but no thanks. In his own words, Rucker does not feel comfortable putting on the orange apron again.

…Rucker didn’t hear from the individual store. Instead, he heard from the corporate office in Atlanta.

“‘We want you back.’ It’s like, no, you want this to stop. That’s what you want,” said Rucker.
