Former police commissioner cries weh, weh, weh all the way home

The former police commissioner in charge when Freddie Gray died from injuries sustained in a Baltimore police van said State’s Attorney Marilyn J. Mosby is “in over her head” and has added more flaws to a broken justice system by prosecuting innocent officers.

Former police commissioner: Mosby ‘incompetent’ and ‘vindictive’ – Baltimore Sun

Sure being a police officer is supposed to be an honorable profession but that honor is tarnished when officers disrespect the laws they are supposed to be upholding. And that is exactly what happens when officers cover for each other or obstruct investigations into “their own.” The honor of the badge is tarnished. When a police officer covers up for another officer they aren’t just “protecting their own,” they are choosing their fellow officers over the public they are sworn to protect and the laws they are sworn to enforce.

Shaheen Cautions ‘Bernie or Bust’ Movement: Don’t Hand Trump the Election

“I am reminded of the 2000 race between Al Gore and George W. Bush when people who were not happy with Al Gore in New Hampshire voted for Ralph Nader and swung the state’s four electoral votes to George W. Bush and that was the election,” Shaheen said.

“At this point, they’ve got to decide what they want to do. Do they want to continue to complain or do they want to make a positive difference in what happens in November? I’m betting that they love their country more than they want to complain.”

Why It’s Impossible to Indict a Cop

According to one old sociological chestnut, the monopoly on the legitimate use of violence is what defines modern government, and this monopoly is jealously protected against the second-guessing of puny civilians.

...The first step to controlling the police is to get rid of the fantasy, once and for all, that the law is on our side. The law is firmly on the side of police who open fire on unarmed civilians.

… “[Internal Affairs] will never, ever credit the claim of police abuse. They hide witnesses, they push witnesses around. The only time I cooperate with them is when I know I have their hands tied behind their back.”

… The reality is, it is extremely difficult to get law enforcement to police itself, and self-regulation [in the nation’s police departments] is, …just as it is in poultry processing or coal mining, a sick joke.

… What about all the times when excessive force suits get settled out of court? …The union covers the officer’s lawyer, and research from Joanna Schwartz of UCLA Law School found that governments, not individual officers, paid out 99.98 percent of the damages. Settlements and damages aren’t paid by the police department, …but typically out of the general municipal budget.

…In the unusual instances when a law enforcement officer is convicted, the penalties tend to be remarkably light.

…Such Scandinavian-style lenity is quite different from the mind-numbing severity of sentences inflicted on non-cops.

Jeanne Shaheen on the Opioid Crisis – at the DNC

(Keep in mind, while she reels off the number of deaths, that entire population of the state is somewhere around 1.3 million.)

A solid assessment of the crisis, Senator.

I would add that many treatment centers shift the addiction to methadone, which is not a permanent fix. If an addict doesn’t have access to a daily doses they have to rely on illegal drugs again.

We need to investigate and offer non-opioid treatments for opiate addiction.

I would also add that so many of these stories of heroin and other opiod addiction/overdose stories start with medically-prescribed, heavy doses of opiod based drugs.

We need to cut that pipeline off and make not-addictive pain killer options available from the get-go.

(Pssst, I’m referring to medical MJ,ladies…)

Watch a Woman Older Than Her Right to Vote Pledge Arizona’s Delegates to Hillary Clinton

The DNC is currently doing a roll call of delegates for procedural confirmation that, yes, Hillary Clinton is the Democratic nominee for president. One of the voices chiming in: 102-year-old Jerry Emmett, born before American women had the legal right to vote in a presidential election.

Watch a Woman Older Than Her Right to Vote Pledge Arizona’s Delegates to Hillary Clinton

She voiced her state’s votes for Clinton and her excitement just shined.

What a wild, crazy, wonderful thing to be born before your own right to vote and then to help nominate a woman for President in one of the major political parties.

I mean, just, wow.

Privilege is what allows Sanders supporters to say they’ll “never” vote for Clinton

If you’re reviling Clinton for saying something racist and stupid in 1994 in favor of a crime bill that turned out to be a very bad idea, but you’re not reviling Sanders for actually using his political power to pass that very bad crime bill law, I want you to take a long, long think about why that is. If you’re reviling Clinton for campaign contributions made by banks, but did not revile Barack Obama for the same thing, I want you to take a long, long think about why that is.

I see people swear up and down their hatred of Clinton isn’t because she’s a woman, or doesn’t stem directly from decades of vicious, lying conservative propaganda— they will swear it!–and then immediately turn around and eviscerate her for something Sanders did (or is) himself, or call her a “crook,” or say nonsense like, “She doesn’t have an honest bone in her body.” Conservative copywriters, whoever you are, I applaud you for your success in taking a complete and total fabrication and successfully integrating it so far into the American consciousness that there are people who agree with nearly every policy position Clinton has today, yet will still claim that she’s “dishonest.” That’s some impressive chicanery, and I mean that.

…the stakes are far, far too high for us to selfishly stay home because we didn’t get our first choice. I will happily, proudly vote for either Clinton or Sanders, and I hope you will do the right thing and join me.

Freddie Gray trial prosecutors drop remaining charges against officers

Prosecutors have dropped the remaining charges against Baltimore police officers accused in the death of Freddie Gray, bringing an end to the case without a conviction.

…Shortly after the announcement that charges would be dropped, a defiant State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby held a news conference, saying there was “a reluctance” and “an obvious bias” among some officers investigating Gray’s death.

“We do not believe Freddie Gray killed himself,” she said, standing in the neighbourhood where Gray was arrested, a mural of him on a wall over her shoulder. “We stand by the medical examiner’s determination that Freddie Gray’s death was a homicide.”

Freddie Gray trial prosecutors drop remaining charges against officers – World – CBC News

What the literal fuck????!

If officers of the law cover for other officers who break the law they become culpable in those same crimes. Every single officer who hampered this investigation chose loyalty to his or her own gang of thugs over the rule of law and the safety of the citizenry. They do not deserve to have badges, let alone our respect.

In other words, fuck those fucking lying murderous pigs!!!

Black Lives Matter protesters want to send message to Clinton

Khalif criticized Clinton for supporting the 1994 crime bill that was signed into law by her husband. He also charged that the Democratic Party largely ignored the BLM movement as the party put together its convention platform.

Khalif said some of Clinton’s rhetoric on the campaign trail has been patronizing….

…Khalif said Republican nominee Donald Trump is a “racist bigot” who won’t win votes from his community. But he said Clinton still has a chance to keep young black voters from casting ballots elsewhere or sitting out the election.

He said Clinton should specifically make it clear that she will expect authorities to fire and prosecute police officers who are captured on video shooting unarmed men and women.

Black Lives Matter protesters want to send message to Clinton

(I’d add) or engaging in other unlawful and violent activities.

Hate Bill’s ’94 crime bill. I like the sum total of his body work but I do not approve of that bill. At all. She supported it too. Yes, I imagine political expediency was involved. I also like to think that their (and many, many others) mistakes in this huge, deep, important matter were at least in part innocent on their part.

Hear me out here. I’m letting not them off the hook. Far from it. I’m trying to understand how people I have so much respect for could be so soulless and dumb. This is what I’ve got so far:

Ignorance that was born of being in a bubble. Even when Hillary and Bill were mixing it up with folks of different backgrounds than themselves they were still in a bit of a bubble. They both came from humble backgrounds to be sure but they both seem to come from people with j-o-b-s. They also have the lucky accident of being white going for them in a-l-l sorts of situations. They achieved a middle class lifestyle while they were still young. …And -most importantly here- hung out with other people on similar paths, with similar career trajectories.

The Clintons weren’t exposed to things like the idea of DWB. I’m not saying they didn’t hang out with black people. I’m saying the black people -and probably all of the people that they hung out- with were successful, upwardly mobile types themselves. Types, who for various reason, might not have wanted to make a big deal of race-related things that happened to them. If a DWB story did come up it might have been something that seemed (in the context of circles who do not know, experience &/or discuss these things) like they were isolated incidents and not an entrenched, malignant problem.

I’m just speculating, I don’t know the specifics really but we can all agree it wasn’t something that came up a lot in progressive, left or Democratic Party politics until recently. Bill and Hillary were simply not acquainted with the instant turmoil and economic turmoil that an arrest or incarceration causes a family. The ensuing devastation to a community when many, many incidents are concentrated within a certain population wasn’t on their radar. It should have been but it wasn’t.

Like many who do not see the day-to-day effects of heavy, military-style policing on a given community, the Clintons might have found it hard to fathom that Officers of the Law were doing anything but ‘enforcing the peace.’ I imagine the thinking simply goes along the lines of, ‘the police are there to protect us, right? So the police are right.’

For someone who is not already exposed to these realities it must have been hard to believe that, for some Americans, the police aren’t always right and the U.S. justice system is very, very unjust.

With today’s cell phone video reporting and media attention on huge demonstrations in support of #BlackLivesMatter , it’s probably a concept someone like Bill or Hillary is much more familiar with now than they have been in the past.

Hillary’s a wonk. In the parlance of recent times, she’s a total geek for that shit. When she picks her determined course of action to address a problem, she back it up with a whole bunch of research and clearly spelled out programs. That’s who she is.

She also has spent a great deal of her life working in service to public sphere. She has championed a lot of programs that are all about helping raise people up. She is the person to champion the cause of making the justice system fair and just. We just need to make sure she is well-informed so that when she creates a plan it helps, rather than hurts.

Short version, hated Bill’s bill but I like his body of work so I choose to think he’d do it different if he knew then what he knows now. Same goes for his wife’s support of his crime bill.

So get out there and make sure Hillary knows what is happening with institutional injustice in the criminal/penal system kids!

My night out in Cleveland with the worst men on the internet

It doesn’t matter that he doesn’t mean it. It doesn’t matter that he’s secretly quite a sweet, vulnerable person who is gracious to those he considers friends. It doesn’t matter that somewhere in the rhinestone-rimmed hamster wheel of his mind is a conscience. It doesn’t matter because the harm he does is real.

He is leading a yammering army of trolls to victory on terms they barely understand. This is how we got to a place where speakers at the RNC are actively calling for the slaughter and deportation of foreigners, declaring that Hillary Clinton is an agent of Satan, and hearing only cheers from the floor.

They ventriloquise the fear of millions into a scream of fire in the crowded theatre of modernity where all the doors are locked, and then they watch the stampede.
