Collective Trains Bystanders to Give First Aid to Shooting Victims in Chicago’s South Side

This was part of an emergency first aid training hosted by Ujimaa Medics at the neighborhood branch of the Chicago Public Library. The group, consisting of volunteer medical professionals and community members, has been organizing such free and low-cost workshops since 2014, to teach people in neighborhoods plagued by gun violence how to administer first aid to victims while waiting for professional emergency medical assistance to arrive.

Attendees learn how to help in those first few minutes after a shooting that are critical to ensuring a victim’s survival. They’re taught to stem bleeding from gunshot wounds; treat sucking chest wounds; and provide psychological comfort to someone who’s been injured. They also learn how to use available resources in a pinch—plastic bags to cover their hands if gloves aren’t available, maxi pads to absorb blood from wounds.

…Although some of the group’s trainers are doctors, EMTs, and nurses, most of UMedics’ trainers have no professional medical background—some are teens or even children. This isn’t an accident: Caverl argues that African-Americans need to see medical know-how delivered by people like themselves.

…On Saturday, the trainers explained how to establish an authoritative presence and redirect the energy of what they described as typical shooting-scene “characters”—”the protector,” who means well but interferes with the medic’s attempts to administer aid; “the photographer,” who may be trying to take pictures or videos of the scene, spreading panic and distressing the victim; and “the vengeful guy,” who may know the victim, be riled up, and calling for immediate retaliation against the perpetrator. By the same logic, they also offer pointers on how to interact with paramedics and police, who may be skeptical of or interfere with street medics.

India Supreme Court restores ‘love jihad’ marriage

Hadiya Jahan, who is in her 20s, was born into a Hindu family, but converted to Islam and married a Muslim man.

Her family alleged she was brainwashed as part of an anti-Hindu conspiracy, prompting a lower court to annul the marriage.

India’s top court has now set aside the ruling, restoring their marriage.

Marriages between Hindus and Muslims have long attracted censure in conservative Indian families, but the attachment of a deeper, sinister motive to them is a recent phenomenon.

…In November, a top court bench allowed Ms Jahan to leave her father’s custody and resume her studies.

CNN’s Cuomo confronts Cruz for mocking Dem rival on name change: Your real name is Rafael

Cruz’s campaign released a jingle Tuesday night mocking Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) for going by Beto instead of Robert.

…“And you know what, your name is Rafael, you go by Ted but your middle name is Edward, that’s a more Anglicized version of it,” he continued. “He went the other way and has a more ethnic version of his name — why go after him? You’re both doing the same thing.”

Stormy Daniels sues Trump, says ‘hush agreement’ invalid because he never signed

The civil suit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court and obtained by NBC News, alleges that her agreement not to disclose her “intimate” relationship with Trump is invalid because while both Daniels and Trump’s attorney Michael Cohen signed it, Trump never did.

…”To be clear, the attempts to intimidate Ms. Clifford into silence and ‘shut her up’ in order to ‘protect Mr. Trump’ continue unabated,” says the suit. “On or about February 27, 2018, Mr. Trump’s attorney Mr. Cohen surreptitiously initiated a bogus arbitration proceeding against Ms. Clifford in Los Angeles.”

…The suit also says that Trump must know that Cohen is trying to silence Clifford, since rules for the New York bar, of which Cohen is a member, require him to keep his client informed at all times. “[I]t strains credulity to conclude that Mr. Cohen is acting on his own accord and without the express approval and knowledge of his client Mr. Trump.”

VA: “We took a broken system and just broke it completely”

President Donald Trump last year hailed a multibillion-dollar initiative to create a seamless digital health system for active duty military and the VA that he said would deliver “faster, better, and far better quality care.”

But the military’s $4.3 billion Cerner medical record system has utterly failed to achieve those goals at the first hospitals that went online. Instead, technical glitches and poor training have caused dangerous errors and reduced the number of patients who can be treated.

Trump’s “Drained Swamp” Includes Hundreds of Ex-Lobbyists and D.C. Insiders

When the Trump administration took office early last year, hundreds of staffers from lobbying firms, conservative think tanks and Trump campaign groups began pouring into the very agencies they once lobbied or whose work they once opposed.

…At least 187 Trump political appointees have been federal lobbyists, and despite President Trump’s campaign pledge to “drain the swamp,” many are now overseeing the industries they once lobbied on behalf of. We’ve also discovered ethics waivers that allow Trump staffers to work on subjects in which they have financial conflicts of interest. In addition, at least 254 appointees affiliated with Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and at least 125 staffers from prominent conservative think tanks are now working in the federal government, many of whom are on teams to repeal Obama-era regulations.

Drilling down even further, at least 35 Trump political appointees worked for or consulted with groups affiliated with the the billionaire libertarian brothers Charles and David Koch, who also have a network of advocacy groups, nonprofits, private companies and political action committees. At least 25 Trump appointees came from the influential Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank founded in 1973, and at least two came from Heritage Action, its related political nonprofit. Heritage says the Trump administration, in just its first year, has enacted nearly two-thirds of its 334 policy recommendations.

Secret documents show 319 NYPD staffers should have been fired for misconduct

…BuzzFeed gained access hundreds of pages of internal documents that revealed more than 300 staffers of the New York Police Department lied, cheated, stole or even assaulted people while on the job.

The “secret” employment files lists at least 50 staffers for lying on official reports or under oath, and 38 have been found guilty of excessive force by an internal police tribunal, fighting or firing their weapon unnecessarily. That adds to the 57 staffers found guilty for driving under the influence and 71 found guilty of ticket-fixing.

Trump Organization Ordered Presidential Seals For Trump Golf Courses

“We made the design, and the client confirmed the design,” Joseph E. Bates, who owns Eagle Sign and Design, told ProPublica while declining to identify the customer.

ProPublica and WNYC reported that they had reviewed an order form that listed Trump International as the buyer.

…It is illegal to use the U.S. presidential seal in a way that would convey or give a false impression of sponsorship or approval by the U.S. government. It is also illegal to knowingly manufacture, reproduce, sell or purchase the presidential seal for resale.

…Trump vowed that profits from foreign government representatives’ stays at his family’s properties would be donated to the U.S. Treasury, but that’s a promise the family has yet to keep, the The Associated Press reported in January.

Since Trump took office, the Trump Organization has received more than $600,000 from political organizations, companies, foreign governments and officials that stay at Trump hotels and resorts, watchdog group Public Citizen reported.

Russian spy critically ill after exposure to ‘unknown substance’

A former Russian spy was critically ill after exposure to an “unknown substance,” British media reported in a case that immediately drew parallels to the poisoning of former Russian agent Alexander Litvinenko.

National and local authorities said only that a man and a woman were found unconscious Sunday afternoon on a bench in a shopping mall in Salisbury, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) west of London.

British media identified him as Sergei Skripal, 66, who was convicted in Russia on charges of spying for Britain and sentenced in 2006 to 13 years in prison. Skripal was freed in 2010 as part of a U.S.-Russian spy swap.

….A British judge wrote in a 2016 report that Litvinenko’s death was an assassination carried out by Russia’s security services — with the likely approval of President Vladimir Putin.

UK briefed CIA on Trump campaign contacts with Russia months before election

Over two months before the 2016 presidential election, the head of British intelligence flew to Washington to brief then-CIA Director John Brennan on intercepted communications between the Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and the Russian government, according to a report from the New Yorker.

…Robert Hannigan, then the head of the UK’s Government Communications Headquarters, reportedly alerted Brennan about these likely illegal contacts shortly before the agency received a confidential package that outlined Russian President Vladimir Putin’s direct involvement in Russia’s online influence, disruption, and disinformation campaign that aimed to damage 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and help Trump get elected.

…By August, intelligence agencies were aware that the Democratic National Committee email servers were hacked in July 2016, and the FBI had officially launched an investigation into Trump’s ties to Russia.
