…”What do I do to help the E2’s and E3’s that are on this ship? That’s your duty. Not to complain.

Everyone’s scared about this thing. But I tell you something, if this ship was in combat and there were hypersonic missiles coming at it, you’d be pretty (BLEEP) scared too. (BACKGROUND YELLING: WHOA)]

Thomas Modly transcript on Capt. Brett Crozier to USS Theodore Roosevelt – CNNPolitics

Never ever forget that this is how the Trump administration spoke to these sailors. Never forgive and never forget. Never. Ever. Forget.

Navy Secretary Modly’s aircraft carrier speech misfires badly

Secretary Modly addressed Crozier’s crew over the ship’s loudspeakers. Punctuated with profanity, his words provide a fascinating case study in speechmaking around sensitive topics.

…Modly’s address also included broad, blanket statements and he spoke in absolute terms, which should be avoided in such circumstances.

…Modly’s mention of the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee by name made it virtually impossible to claim the speech was not political.

…Knowing your audience and speaking to them in terms that are likely to resonate with them is something most speakers at least attempt to do. Modly didn’t bother. He mocked the crew’s popular leader, who has tested positive for COVID-19, by sarcastically calling him “a martyr C.O. who wasn’t getting the help he needed.”

….Modly asserts incorrectly and definitively that “no one expected this pandemic.” A range of astute observers and global health professionals have been warning us about this very topic for years.

…“The only reason we are dealing with this right now is a big authoritative regime called China was not forthcoming about what was happening with this virus,” said Modly. But we know from extensive, highly sourced reporting that the president and his administration were being briefed on the situation developing in China as early as the first days of January.

Incompetence? Meet arrogance and malice.

In the years, decades, and centuries to come, teachers and students will point to the Trump administration as the definition of what not to do.

In fact, after this TrumpVirus crisis is over, Trump might just come to mean the opposite of not only what is right but the opposite of intelligent thinking and might become shorthand for “what not to do.”

Coronavirus: The race to stop the virus spread in Asia’s ‘biggest slum’

But an outbreak of coronavirus in a place where social distancing is an oxymoron could easily turn into a grave public health emergency and overwhelm the city’s stretched public health system.

Nobody realises this more than the officials racing to track and contain the infection.

Patient No 1 of Dharavi lived with his eight-member family – his wife, four daughters, and two sons – in a poky 420 sq ft one-room apartment in a low-rise slum tenement ringed by squalid shanties.

…The man owned another apartment in the same complex. There he hosted five people who had reportedly arrived from Delhi after attending a conference in early March organised by Tablighi Jamaat.

…Hundreds of people who attended the religious event in the capital set off several Covid-19 clusters across the country and are now linked to some 650 cases across 14 states.

The police believe the five men lived in the Dharavi apartment for two days – between 19 and 21 March- before they left for Kerala. “We are trying to trace these people,” said Mr Dighavkar.

…On Thursday, a 35-year-old doctor working with a private hospital and living in the slum tested positive for the virus. Municipality workers scrambled to isolate and seal 300 people living in the doctor’s building. They have also identified 13 high-risk contacts in the building and sent their swabs for testing. The doctor told officials that two nurses in his hospital had tested positive for the virus. And at the weekend, a 30-year-old woman inside the same building complex as the trader, a 60-year-old man, who owns a metal fabrication shop and a 21-year-old male lab technician, tested positive.

“We are still able to try to contain the infection of the gated slum colonies. But there are the slums outside, and if we get cases there, we can’t isolate them at home, and have to send even the high-risk cases to the sports complex quarantine centre,” says Mr Dighavkar.

Coronavirus: Pastor who decried ‘hysteria’ dies after attending Mardi Gras

Pastor Spradlin was one of those who became ill, but tested negative for Covid-19. Even as he was sick, he posted on social media about “hysteria” surrounding the virus.

On the 13th of March Pastor Spradlin shared on Facebook a misleading post comparing swine flu and coronavirus deaths.

It suggested that Barack Obama and Donald Trump respectively had been treated very differently by the media and that it was a politically motivated ploy to harm President Trump.

Earlier the very same day, the president himself had insinuated something very similar at a news conference.

For all of the whinging by his family let’s call his opinions about Trump and the media what they are dog whistles, coming from a selfishly arrogant place of ignorance and hate.

Gendered disinformation might have cost Warren the nomination and us our lives | TheHill

Marvelous AI, a data analytics company creating tools to detect political narratives about individual candidates, did an artificial intelligence analysis of the early months of the 2020 Democratic Presidential Primaries and what they found is that social media narratives about female candidates are more negative and mostly concerned with their character, as opposed to their policies. While such narratives weren’t exclusive to women, they seemed to be the norm for female candidates and the exception for male ones.

They also found that female candidates received more attacks from far-right and fake-news accounts than male politicians, often adding to people’s concerns regarding their electability, with Warren being their primary target.

Tybee Island will fight Georgia governor’s ‘reckless mandate’ to reopen state’s beaches

“As the Pentagon ordered 100,000 body bags to store the corpses of Americans killed by the Coronavirus, Governor Brian Kemp dictated that Georgia beaches must reopen, and declared any decision-makers who refused to follow these orders would face prison and/or fines,” Sessions’ statement read.

“Tybee City Council and I are devastated by the sudden directives and do not support his decisions. The health of our residents, staff and visitors are being put at risk and we will pursue legal avenues to overturn his reckless mandate.”

Perhaps if we survive all of this long enough, we can charge leaders like the governor of GA with the murders they committing.

Speaking of reactionary echo chambers…. What the hell is wrong with the English press? They are more insistent on circulating racist falsehoods than Tucker Carlson.

They are under quarantine in California for fucks sake!

Fauci says Trump agreed not to invoke coronavirus quarantine after intensive White House discussions

The President had said during a news conference on Friday that he advised Vice President Mike Pence not to call Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan or other governors who have been critical of the federal government’s response to the crisis.

“You know what I say? If they don’t treat you right, I don’t call,” Trump said, before adding that Pence is “a different type of person” and will “call quietly anyway.”

On the subject of Pence… There is a huge difference between less evil and not evil. Just because Pence is the former, it does not make him the latter.
