This woman has been stuck in Korea for three years trying to get home to the US

Her adoptive parents never filed the paperwork to make her a US citizen. So Kim Craig fell through the cracks. And now she finds herself stuck in Korea after a visit, unable to get back to the US.

Fleeing ISIS’ assault on girls and women

Things had been getting worse for women in Iraq since the 2003 US-led invasion, [emphasis: mine] the rise of sectarian strife and fundamentalist Islam. But in the summer of 2014 came the biggest blow when ISIS enforced its extreme ideology in northern Iraq.

…Tales of rape and other horrific abuses of women had spread across Nineveh; of the capture and enslavement of non-Muslim women from Yazidi and Christian communities, acts that ISIS claims are justified in the Quran.

So Zainab, who is Muslim, was married off at 16 to save her from ISIS. Three months ago, she became pregnant. In the madness of escaping her ISIS-held town, she lost her baby. She says little about it except there was a lot of blood.

…But what happened to her is also an assault. She was a child still and robbed of her freedom, her life’s trajectory altered because of an ideology that does not value her worth as a woman. Early marriage for girls has emerged, sadly, as a coping mechanism under the militants.
…I ask about her journey from Mosul, why she fled in her condition. Her initial answer is wholly expected: “I was afraid for my daughter.”
She continues: “But I was afraid as much for my son. He would have been brainwashed by them and one day forced to join their ranks.”

…The prospect of a military victory over ISIS in Mosul offers glimmers of hope for a better future, but the women are unsure if life can ever be the same again.

How long, they ask, will it take to reverse the damage that has been done; to undo a perverse way of thinking that does not see women as human beings? How long before they can walk in the streets without constantly surveying their surroundings?

Anti-Vaxxer Mom Changes Mind After Her Three Kids Fall Ill – Yahoo

Kristen O’Meara chose not to vaccinate her young daughters because she was a big believer in anti-vaccination research. That changed when all three were stricken with a case of rotavirus, which causes acute stomach distress. A teacher living outside Chicago, she added that she had “scoured everything” about why vaccines might be harmful and had become “pretty convinced.” She chose not to vaccinate based on the results of her research but had read only material that cast doubt.

Mia Farrow’s adopted son Thaddeus’ friends share their heartbreak over his suicide

Mia Farrow’s adopted son Thaddeus’ friends share their heartbreak over his suicide | Daily Mail Online

Yes, Mia Farrow kind of made an a circus out of international adoption. (Grrrrrrrrrrrr!)  But can we just get one point right here? These are Mia’s “adopted children.” They are her “children.” Period. Adoption is the process through which these people became her children, it doesn’t make them any less her children. Can we, as a society, stop saying “adopted children” and start saying the more accurate (and not as fucking racist and ignorant) “children?”

Pretty please?

Stanford Dean Says Parents are Ruining Their kids By…

She explained that, overall, this generation seems to lack the executive function necessary to make it on their own.  Many students don’t make eye contact, don’t interact with teachers, and when they’re lost or needed help, they text their mom before advocating for themselves.    Julie believes that this is directly correlated with another new development: The behavior of parents. Never in Stanford’s history have so many freshman parents called in to discuss things like:  their student’s roommate situations, teacher complications, opportunities for their student to perform research at the college, and even to discuss their child’s grades.  Now remember, this isn’t 3rd grade, or 8th grade, or even senior year of high school that she’s talking about.  This is COLLEGE and it’s STANFORD UNIVERSITY for crying out loud.  Could there possibly be a correlation between these over-parenters and their kids who seem to be floundering in the basic skills of life? Julie is certain of it.

I’m a White Mother Raising Three Black Children, and Here’s What I Mean When I Say Black Lives Matter

Here’s my once upon a time: I’m a white woman, born and raised by a white family, who grew up to marry a white man. When my husband and I married, we decided we wanted to achieve aa few life goals before having kids. And so, together we designed our future: I graduated college and then went on to grad school, while my husband began climbing the corporate ladder in the financial industry. Then the magical plan came to a halt. I got sick — really, really sick — and ended up at death’s door. Just in the nick of time, I was diagnosed with a chronic autoimmune disease, and I knew within days of my diagnosis that we would adopt.

Please Don’t Ask Me, “Why Didn’t You Adopt a White Baby?”

I’m a mom of three children, all of whom were adopted at birth. My kids are black, and my husband and I are white. When we visit the park, eat at a restaurant, meander around the mall, or stand in a checkout line, we can reliably predict the questions and comments that will come our way.

We are a multi-racial adoptive family, and we realize that our uncommon path to parenthood evokes curiosity. However, there are days we can’t even buy toilet paper or order a sandwich without hearing, “Excuse me … ” followed by a request for personal information or an assumption about adoption or race.

Please Don’t Ask Me, “Why Didn’t You Adopt a White Baby?”

Amen, sister. Amen to every word of this.

New study suggests pesticides could lower IQ

UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health measured the IQs of 7-year-olds whose mothers in the agricultural Salinas Valley in California.

…For every 522 pounds of chemical pesticides applied less than 0.6 miles from where the pregnant mother lived, the child’s IQ declined by 2 points, and the child’s verbal reasoning score declined by 3 points.

…A study published in the journal Pediatrics in 2011 found a link between pesticides in food and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Researchers took urine samples 1,140 children and evaluated them for the symptoms of ADHD.

They found that the children who met the criteria for ADHD had significantly higher levels of a breakdown product of organophosphate pesticides in their urine.
