Poland’s parliament withdraws proposed abortion ban

Poland’s parliament has rejected proposed legislation that would have imposed a near-total ban on abortion.

Current law allows abortion through the 12th week of pregnancy if the woman’s health or life is endangered, if the pregnancy results from a crime, or if the fetus is irreparably damaged.

European politicians from various liberal parties welcomed the news of the proposed ban’s rejection on Twitter, which is being seen as a victory for womens’ rights following the protests earlier this week.

On Monday, thousands of women in Poland took the day off work and school to take part in a pro-choice march to mark what organizers called “Black Monday”.

The day of action was inspired by a 1975 women’s strike in Iceland.

Ghana Will Remove ‘Racist’ Gandhi Statue From Its Oldest University

Professors and students at the University of Ghana called the statue “a slap in the face” because of Gandhi’s “racist identity.”

…The petition, which had more than 1,700 supporters on Thursday, cited letters Gandhi wrote during his time in South Africa as evidence that he advocated for the superiority of Indians over black Africans. It also took issue with his use of the derogatory term kaffir to refer to native Africans and criticized the lack of statues of African heroes and heroines on campus.

White House accuses Israel of betraying trust

The White House accused Israel of a betrayal of trust, in an unusually sharp rebuke over its plans to build hundreds of new settlement homes deep in the West Bank.

Days after President Barack Obama approved a $38 billion Israeli military aid package and attended former president Shimon Peres’s funeral in Jerusalem, the White House railed at the construction of 300 housing units on land “far closer to Jordan than Israel.”

…A sharper tone over settlements now could help put Israel on notice that future ties are at risk and give Washington more credibility with Palestinians and their Arab allies.

In a similarly strong-worded statement, the State Department said building the units “is another step toward cementing a one-state reality of perpetual occupation.”

The plan not only undermines hopes for peace with the Palestinians but “is fundamentally inconsistent with Israel’s future as a Jewish and democratic state,” spokesman Mark Toner said.

…US officials have adopted a more forceful tone with Netanyahu’s government in recent weeks, accusing it of recklessly accelerating construction despite international concern.

Georgia Pope: Tbilisi stadium largely empty for papal Mass

The Pope says Mass in a largely empty stadium on a visit to Georgia after the majority Orthodox Christian Church asks followers to stay away.

…The Orthodox patriarchate said on its website: “As long as there are dogmatic differences between our churches, Orthodox believers will not participate in their prayers”.

One Georgian priest told AP it was a protest against Catholic attempts to convert Orthodox Christians.

“Can you imagine how it would be if a Sunni [Muslim] preacher came to Shia [Muslim] Iran and conducted prayers in a stadium or somewhere else?” Father David Klividze asked. “Such a thing could not be.”

Women in Iran Mount Protest Against Bicycling Ban

Iranian women have taken to their bicycles to oppose a religious ruling banning them from riding in public places. The unexpected “fatwa,” or religious ruling, by the country’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, says a woman riding a bicycle not only attracts the attention of men, but also “exposes the society to sedition.”
