Trump Administration Separates Some Migrant Mothers From Their Newborns Before Returning Them to Detention

Advocates also report that some asylum seekers in the Western District of Texas who have given birth in USMS custody were forced to hand over their newborns to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS). Reuniting with their newborn hinges on their release from federal custody, and whether they can access legal help to navigate the child welfare system.

…Dr. Shelly said she doesn’t know if the U.S. citizen newborns of detained parents are eventually adopted or whether detained patients are deported without regaining custody of their babies. The OB-GYN is also unsure if foster parents have any obligation to remain in communication with parents remanded to USMS custody.

According to USMS, the onus for child care placement is on the detained parent, though it appears as if asylum seekers who give birth in USMS custody don’t have many choices at all.

…U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) could release these women shortly after they are first apprehended, and then refer them to organizations like Annunciation House that can offer support as they pursue asylum and prepare to give birth. But that’s not what happens.

Mpls. police discover 1,700 untested rape kits over 30 years

An internal review of sexual assault cases in Minneapolis turned up an estimated 1,700 untested rape kits from as far back as the 1990s — a backlog that officials say could take at least two years to clear.

…The latest count far surpasses the 194 untested kits reported during an 2015 audit, part of what Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called an “unjustified mistake” that left years of potential evidence sitting in police storage.

…The department’s sex crimes unit is still conducting a final count to determine how many kits remain, which comes amid a national reckoning over sexual harassment and assault.

…Minnesota police frequently struggled to investigate cases of sex assault in the years reviewed, often failing to interview witnesses, collect evidence or even assign detectives.

…Under the state’s rape law enacted last year, police have 10 days to retrieve unrestricted exam kits from health care facilities and 60 days to submit them for testing. They are also required, when asked, to inform victims about the status of their kits and any findings.

David Holmes confirms Trump asked about Ukraine investigation.

David Holmes, an aide to top U.S. diplomat in Ukraine William Taylor, said in private testimony that he overheard President Donald Trump and the U.S. envoy to the European Union, Gordon Sondland, talk about Ukraine in July. Holmes says he was at a restaurant in Kyiv when he heard Trump on a cellphone call loudly asking Sondland if the president of Ukraine had agreed to carry out a probe on former Vice President Joe Biden. Sondland apparently told Trump that Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky “loves your ass” and would do anything he asked.

Jeezus….

No amount of confusion or incompetence is a valid excuse abusing civilians.

This kind of racist overreach is unacceptable in a law abiding society. Hope the family sues the entire community into the stone age over this.

The only way errant police forces are brought to heel is when the community demands it and the only way communities are brought to a point where they demand better behavior from the police officers they employ is when member of the community are unable to ignore the consequences of unlawful and thuggish behavior of the police is when other services are compromised.

If a community is brought to its knees by a suit and other services such as ambulances and schools are unable to give the community what they need, only then will people demand their police officers obey the law.

So to repeat: here’s hoping this family sues the entire municipality beyond bankruptcy all the way back to the stone ages.

Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office Wins Court Battle Against Police Union Over ‘Do Not Call List’ – NBC 10 Philadelphia

The Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas ruled against a lawsuit filed earlier this year by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5, which claimed that the DA’s office violated police officers’ rights by maintaining a “Do Not Call List” filled with the names of cops whose past misconduct branded them as unreliable witnesses.

…The court added that Krasner has an “obligation” to the information because it could negatively affect the outcomes of future court cases.

If the rights and privileges of police officers do not come second to the greater good than their very existence is an insult to not only law and order but justice.

Continued efforts by an association to put the rights and privileges of so-called officers of the law above the just functions of a civilized society is an offence against the society they are duty bound to serve and disqualifies from the position they claim to hold.

The moment any law enforcement officer or organization seeks to raise an officer above the law or set aside behavior that is not 100% strictly in accordance with the laws they are sworn to uphold, they become an enemy of law and order itself.

The huge Gordon Sondland revelation almost everyone missed

“He had to announce the investigations. He didn’t actually have to do them, as I understood it.”

…Not conduct the investigation. Not prosecute anyone. Just announce it.

…After that phone call, Sondland made clear to Holmes (and others who were at the table with him) that Trump didn’t care about Ukraine or corruption in the country more broadly. He cared about the Bidens and getting an investigation into them announced.

‘No One Believes Anything’: Voters Worn Out by a Fog of Political News

About 60 percent of Americans say they regularly see conflicting reports about the same set of facts from different sources.

…“Now more than ever, the lines between fact-based reporting and opinionated commentary seem blurred for people,” said Evette Alexander, research director at the Knight Foundation, which funds journalism and research. “That means they trust what they are seeing less. They are feeling less informed.”

They are also tuning out. Mr. Trudell, a registered independent, stopped paying attention to national news about a year ago. He found it toxic and mentally taxing, and it started arguments that had no end.

…National politics, he said, has started to look like eyewitness testimony: “People can see totally different things, standing right next to each other.”

…How do you have a society without shared reference points, he said Thursday.

…“There’s so much information that’s biased, that no one believes anything. There is so much out there and you don’t know what to believe, so it’s like there is nothing.”

Fake information is only part of the problem. Another is the sheer volume of news and the growing proportion of it that is opinion. Fatigue with it cuts across partisan lines.

…“On the right you have this feeling that the cultural tide has swung against people like me,” said Mr. Hawkins, who grew up evangelical. “There’s this sense of victimhood toward government, media and academia. ‘These people have contempt for us, if not downright hatred, and so cannot be a reliable witness for what we are seeing day to day.’”

…“They had this sense that they had to be skeptical of everything out there but they didn’t have the time to spend hours to make sense of it,” he said.
