Hillary Clinton beats Donald Trump 4-2 in Dixville Notch, N.H., midnight voting

In Dixville Notch, Hillary Clinton beat Donald Trump 4-2. Libertarian Gary Johnson received one vote, and the 2012 Republican candidate, Mitt Romney received a surprise write-in ballot. In the slightly larger burg of Hart’s Location, Clinton won with 17 votes to Trump’s 14. Johnson got three of Hart’s Location votes, while write-ins Bernie Sanders and John Kasicheach got one vote. And in Millsfield, Trump won decisively, 16-4, with one write-in for Bernie Sanders.

…[These towns] lean conservative and tend to vote Republican. Dixville voted for the Republican in every election since 1960 — including Barry Goldwater who lost in a landslide to Lyndon Johnson — until going for Obama in 2008, and splitting the vote between Romney and Obama in 2012.

Women’s Progress In Cabinet Positions Has Stalled Since Janet Reno

Since then, though, women’s progress has been halting, according to data collected by the Center for American Women and Politics that is updated through May 2015. Though President Obama appointed Hillary Clinton to serve as his first secretary of state, each of his terms had a lower percentage of women in cabinet-level positions than the corresponding term of Bill Clinton’s (albeit a higher percentage than the corresponding term of President George W. Bush.)

Ana Navarro Voted For Hillary Clinton

CNN commenter Ana Navarro became a bit of a political celebrity during this election cycle—her on-air criticism of Donald Trump, combined with her unapologetic banter with loyal Trump commenter Scottie Hughes, have turned Navarro into an internet darling. The longtime Republican strategist has been one of the few conservative talking heads on cable news to fully denounce Trump’s candidacy, and she has done so in vibrant terms. After a 2005 recording caught the candidate bragging about “grabbing” women “by the pussy,” for instance, Navarro called Trump “disgusting” and refused to accept his half-hearted apologies about “locker room” talk.

NH Town clerks coping with deluge of voter-registration requests

New Hampshire Secretary of State William Gardner has predicted that 738,606 ballots will be cast in the state Tuesday, which would be a record for numbers as well as percentage, equal to roughly 72 percent of eligible voters. In 2008, 70 percent of New Hampshire voters cast ballots for the presidential race, one of the three highest rates of any state in the country: national turnout was 57.5 percent that year.

The Secretary of State’s website says New Hampshire had 919,126 registered voters in New Hampshire as of Oct. 7, with undeclared voters (351,984) outnumbering adherents of the two parties: 295,687 Republicans and 271,455 Democrats.

In 2012, 710,972 votes were cast in the presidential election in New Hampshire.

“The reality is, I am looking at hundreds of tents and people living there peacefully,” Hacker said in a phone interview from the site Thursday. “At the center of camp is a sacred fire where they are (protesting) by prayer.”

In contrast, Hacker said across the Cannonball River, authorities have barricaded a road to block protesters from the pipeline site, and have installed floodlights along the river to spot anyone trying to cross over from the main camp. He said surveillance helicopters regularly fly over the camp.

…Hacker said the clergy members, who represent 20 faiths, ceremonially burned a copy of a 1452 papal order allowing Europeans to take land from people deemed non-Christian savages.

Amish ask for forgiveness from Native Americans

A local Amish bishop recently met with representatives of a dozen American Indian tribes. He and other Amish apologized for the way their ancestors treated Native Americans and their land in early America. In an emotional session, both groups shed tears.

“Please forgive us for the wrong we did,” the bishop asked Native Americans gathered in a meeting place at Witmer. “We ask forgiveness, and we’ll forgive you, and God bless your land and your people.

Another Amish man said, “If this would have been done years ago, how much more healing would have been brought. But here we are. There’s no time too late.”

12 Loose Rules to Follow as an Effective Ally at Standing Rock: A Blueprint for White Solidarity…

A brief disclaimer: As a relatively young white man, I am not an expert in white allyship for native causes, and am in no way a spokesperson for any indigenous movement. I was inspired to write this piece only because of painful mistakes I have witnessed continuously repeated in native space by people like me. In fact, virtually all the actions one can unintentionally take to hamper indigenous movements I have personally committed. I am writing this so that others can avoid common pitfalls and step into what I see as effective allyship within native movements.

12 Loose Rules to Follow as an Effective Ally at Standing Rock: A Blueprint for White Solidarity… – Medium

This is amazing.

Before this piece, to the best of my recollection, I have never read anything on white allyship or “checking your privilege” that wasn’t trite, obnoxious, and patronizing to either ally, the populations they are trying to support, or (more likely) both.

Simply awesome read.

Kudos, “relatively young white man!”

Two U.S. Troops and at Least 30 Afghans Are Killed in Battle With Taliban

Taliban insurgents killed two U.S. Special Operations forces during a firefight Thursday in northern Afghan, and U.S. airstrikes in support of the troops killed a number of civilians, officials said.

…The operation in the village of Buzi Kandahari came after the provincial capital was briefly overrun by the insurgents last month. The Afghan and U.S. forces were ambushed and encircled by militants and snipers with heavy weaponry and called for air support after several troops were killed and injured, a senior Afghan military official said.

The U.S. military then struck the densely populated area, said Mahmood Danish, a spokesman for the Kunduz governor. Many of the casualties were women and children, he said.

…A witness said he saw at least 15 bodies piled into trucks after families tried to parade them through the city to protest against the killings but were obstructed by police. Health officials said at least another four bodies were at the hospital. At least 30 other patients were being treated for injuries, 12 of them children and many in critical condition, they said. Military and government officials couldn’t immediately confirm the death toll.

Mom Breaks Into Tears: ‘I Got To Vote For A Woman For President’

Her parents divorced when she was a girl, in the 1960s, when banks could deny women loans if they couldn’t get a man to co-sign. “My mother couldn’t get credit. She couldn’t buy a car without a male signature. She couldn’t get an apartment without a male signature.”
….“To think about how far we’ve come,” Wilkinson added. “The fight and struggle just to vote for an intelligent, qualified, viable woman ― it was just sort of overwhelming to me on that morning. And I was thanking God that I was able to do this.”
