Multiple people arrested at Flint water town hall meeting

Officers stopped men wearing hats from entering the church sanctuary unless they removed them, and men who would not remove their hats were asked to leave. The issue led to arguments between members of the public and police.

They also escorted people out who used profanity inside the church.

“There’s a couple people that’s arrested,” Johnson said. “There’s a couple people cussing in the church, disorderly conduct.”

Colorado’s Governor John Hickenlooper warily learns to live with pot

“We were worried about everything,” Hickenlooper tells Yahoo News. “We were worried about kid usage going up, people coming into work high, the branding of the state. We haven’t seen anything negative in regard to any of those things.”

…”Reefer Madness and all the hysteria that surrounded marijuana in the 1950s and earlier made us so cynical about the whole thing — and that lesson tempers how we market the risks to teenagers so that they’ll hear it.”

The attorney general just ordered the Justice Department to review its policy on pot. What are you going to do if Sessions tries to crack down on marijuana in your state?

Well, you know, Amendment 64 passed 55 percent to 45 percent here. Polls show it’s over 60 percent approval now. I took a solemn oath to uphold the Constitution of the state of Colorado. Our voters put marijuana into our Constitution. I don’t really have too much choice, the way I look at it.

Security worker with rifle at DAPL protests arrested for domestic violence

Thompson is the security worker who got into a conflict with protesters as he drove down N.D. Highway 1806 towards the Dakota Access Pipeline protest camps on Oct. 27 to take photos of burning equipment. Thompson was disguised as a protester and carried a loaded assault rifle and handgun in an unmarked truck, Bureau of Criminal Investigations Special Agent Scott Betz testified in court last month.

Two protesters allegedly rammed their cars into Thompson’s to get him off the road, where the protesters said he was endangering people. There was also a confrontation in the water, during which Thompson held an AR-15 rifle and some protesters allegedly threatened him with knives.

Trump’s Shadow Looms Over Georgia House Race and Stokes GOP Identity Crisis

A splintered GOP field gives Democrats a chance to pick up a Republican seat on Tuesday.

…The failure of Republicans to pass their plan to overhaul the nation’s health-care system has sown doubts with some suburban GOP voters about Trump’s effectiveness in cutting deals with lawmakers in Washington as well as the party’s promises.

…Trump’s pugilism and lack of a cohesive conservative worldview on fiscal and foreign policy have confounded Republicans here.

…The way Republican contenders are handling Trump and the concurrent rise of populism and moderate angst in the wake of his victory is revealing, even though the names of the near-dozen candidates are unfamiliar. Everyone seems to be laboring, with varying success, to figure out a pitch that pulls together the splintered GOP ranks.

Oregon voters may toss constitutional ban on duels

Senate Joint Resolution 44 would repeal Article II, Section 9 from the Oregon Constitution, which says anyone who offers, accepts or knowingly participates in a duel can’t hold public office.

…The proposal had its first hearing Wednesday and Republican Sen. Brian Boquist, its chief sponsor, said it’s one of several archaic laws that just don’t make sense in modern times.

First Woman to Run in Boston Marathon Is Doing It Again — 50 Years Later

“The marathon was a man’s race in those days; women were considered too fragile to run it,” she wrote in an essay for The New York Times 10 years ago. “But I had trained hard and was confident of my strength. Still, it took a body block from my boyfriend to knock the official off the course.” Switzer recovered to finish in 4 hours 20 minutes.

…“In 1967, few would have believed that marathon running would someday attract millions of women, become a glamour event in the Olympics and on the streets of major cities, help transform views of women’s physical ability and help redefine their economic roles in traditional cultures,” Switzer wrote.

Over the years, Switzer has competed in more than 30 marathons, winning New York in 1974 in 3:07:29, and has worked as a television commentator. She is the founder of 261 Fearless, a running club for women. The name comes from the number she wore in 1967.

…Of her legacy as a pioneer, she wrote in The Times: “We learned that women are not deficient in endurance and stamina, and that running requires no fancy facilities or equipment. Women’s marathoning has created a global legacy.”

If you were raised on a steady diet of Boston area sports anytime before the last 10 or 12 years you just always end up cheering on the underdog, the people’s competitor, the David against the Goliath. It’s been bred into your consciousness.

Boston area sports have always been a significant part of my pop-culture diet and I just can’t help but to dig the hell out of stories like this. Kudos 261! Way to open up sports to more and more people. Way to make positive change happen.

In 2015 Lelisa Desisa Won the Boston Marathon Again, This Time for Himself

BOSTON — Two hours after Lelisa Desisa won the Boston Marathon in 2013, two bombs ripped through the finish area, killing three spectators and wounding 264 others.

In the aftermath, Desisa formed a bond with the people of Boston and presented his winner’s medal back to the city.

On Monday, Desisa, a 25-year-old Ethiopian, won the men’s elite race in Boston again, pulling away from an uncommonly large pack of contenders in the last few miles for a commanding victory in 2 hours 9 minutes 17 seconds.

I always thought it was so nice that Desisa cam back and won again; this time on a much happier note.

ACLU Report Details Horrors Suffered by Orleans Parish Prisoners in Wake of Hurricane Katrina

The report documents the experiences of thousands of men, women and children who were abandoned at Orleans Parish Prison (OPP) in the days after the storm. “The prisoners inside the Orleans Parish Prison suffered some of the worst horrors of Hurricane Katrina,” said Eric Balaban, a staff attorney for the National Prison Project. “Because society views prisoners as second-class citizens, their stories have largely gone unnoticed and therefore untold.”

…The ACLU report describes a history of neglect at Orleans Parish Prison, one of the most dangerous and mismanaged jails in the country. This culture of neglect was evident in the days before Katrina, when the sheriff declared that the prisoners would remain “where they belong,” despite the mayor’s decision to declare the city’s first-ever mandatory evacuation. OPP even accepted prisoners, including juveniles as young as 10, from other facilities to ride out the storm. As floodwaters rose in the OPP buildings, power was lost, and entire buildings were plunged into darkness. Deputies left their posts wholesale, leaving behind prisoners in locked cells, some standing in sewage-tainted water up to their chests.

…Prisoners went days without food, water and ventilation, and deputies admit that they received no emergency training and were entirely unaware of any evacuation plan. Even some prison guards were left locked in at their posts to fend for themselves, unable to provide assistance to prisoners in need.

Among the people profiled in the ACLU report are:

– Ivy Gisclair, who was being held at OPP for $700 in traffic violations (mostly parking tickets) and had never been in any serious trouble with the law. After days in OPP following the storm, Ivy was transferred to Hunt, where he witnessed stabbings, rapes and countless fights. Ivy was finally transferred to Bossier Parish Maximum Security Prison. His release date came and went. When he asked a guard about it, he was pepper sprayed, repeatedly shocked with a Taser, beaten by multiple guards, and put in solitary confinement with no clothes. Ivy was released in an orange prison jumpsuit at a gas station by the side of the road, three weeks after his scheduled release date. It was the day of Hurricane Rita.

– Renard Reed, a guard at OPP’s psychiatric ward who reported to work before the hurricane out of a sense of camaraderie and shared responsibility. Like many other guards, Renard was locked in during his shift to prevent desertion, and was then ordered to go to the roof with a shotgun and shoot anyone trying to leave one of the flooded buildings. He was still stranded at the prison long after the prisoners were evacuated.

– Ashley George, a 13-year-old girl housed in OPP’s Youth Center, who was moved to an area adjacent to an adult male holding area where the men watched her use the toilet. As the building began to flood, Ashley spent days in water up to her neck. Adult prisoners rescued Ashley and the other children from the waters. After being taken to the bridge for evacuation, Ashley was lucky enough to be given a bag of potato chips and water. She reports again being forced to relieve herself publicly and that pregnant girls received no assistance or treatment.

All these years later it still sickens me to think of how few people faced any consequences for the inhumane and dangerous treatment of others during the storm.
