Trump Spoke For 62 Percent Of The Debate, Clinton For 38 Percent — But That’s How It Always Is For Women

It doesn’t come as a huge surprise that Donald Trump took up the majority of the airtime during the first presidential debate Monday night. Anyone watching could see that, as usual, he was talking more than he was listening.

…The issue of women being professionally silenced — even at this highest level — is so well understood by women in politics that one story went viral just this month about the tactics women in Obama’s White House used to make sure their voices were actually heard in meetings.

Culture Norms and Its Interaction With Race

Culture is how we pass information about our world across generations. It’s why our children speak our language, it’s how they learn from us. Culture is why some humans eat with a fork, and some eat with chopsticks. Culture explains why someone standing really close while they talk to you might feel threatening to a European, but comforting to a West African. Culture defines what acceptable volumes are when speaking, and how women are expected to act in social situations.

Culture defines all of our social expectations, but also our social prejudices. Every single thing we do and say, we do and say in the context of our culture.

Now, making a culture normative — that is, it defines what is “normal” — is quite useful. The French used it well in England. Another time it was used was when West Africans were brought to this country as chattel slaves.

The society here in America needed a way to justify the enslavement of a people for no other reason than they looked a bit different. Like the Normans, they used culture to do it. Slaves were made to speak English but were forbidden to read and write. In fact, the myth was promoted that they were slow and couldn’t even be taught.

White people saw slaves as animals, apes or at best, “lesser humans.” They expected slaves to work like animals too — long, hard, and without complaint. Naturally, slaves rebelled, slowing work or feigning sickness. Blacks were seen by everyone as inherently lazy, and lazy Blacks were beaten or killed.

White people expected slaves to be subservient — a particularly useful tactic since less than a quarter of whites actually owned slaves. Slaves had to do whatever any white person told them to do. This made all whites “better” than slaves, and supportive of the system.

And there were the sexual controls. White men objectified and raped Black women at will, while promoting the myth that white women’s purity was threatened merely by the gaze of a Black man. This was particularly useful as a means to control… [Black women,] Black men and white women.

It’s Not About Race!

I come at this subject from a different history of experience and a resulting point of view but [with the exception of my bracketed and non-italicized addition] the above passage was so close to my own thinking it was thinking it was like reading a much more organized and more eloquent version of my own thoughts.

Wells Fargo staff secretly opened millions of unauthorized accounts to meet lofty sales targets. A class-action suit has been filed on behalf of employees who obeyed the law and failed to meet quotas.

10 Emotional Abuse Tactics That Trump Blatantly Used in the First Debate

Did you notice any of these in the presidential debate? Emotional and verbal abuse are being normalized – so let’s shed some light to show what’s really going on.

10 Emotional Abuse Tactics That Trump Blatantly Used in the First Debate — Everyday Feminism

Sigh…

I get where the ladies are coming from on this but I have to admit the lens they are using and the language they use to frame it rubs me the wrong way.

Heightening the awareness of this sort of of behavior as “abuse” naturally reinforces the image of women as victims. After all, you can’t have an abuser without there also being a victim…. It allows to defaults to a rigid us against them delineation of gender. The suggestion that men are the defacto abuser and women the perpetual victim isn’t overt but is definitely present. It just seems to me that reinforcing the weakened, victim archetype of femininity (and oppressive, abusive nature of males) is counter-intuitive to the goal of empowering women.

Would the article really be all that less effective if they referred to Trump’s behaviors as “10 Classic Moves Only Assholes Employ?”

High School Boys Treated Like Women in Congress

Men make up 80% of congress, which means they have the majority vote on issues that directly affect women. This EPIC high school teacher is on a mission to show his male students what it feels like for the women in congress who don’t have an equal say on policies that specifically affect females. In a vote about school policies, the tables have turned… 80% female students and 20% male students vote on policies such as reduced dance ticket prices for women and location of men’s lockers. How do the male students feel when they are outnumbered and outvoted?

Anti-Vaxxer Mom Changes Mind After Her Three Kids Fall Ill – Yahoo

Kristen O’Meara chose not to vaccinate her young daughters because she was a big believer in anti-vaccination research. That changed when all three were stricken with a case of rotavirus, which causes acute stomach distress. A teacher living outside Chicago, she added that she had “scoured everything” about why vaccines might be harmful and had become “pretty convinced.” She chose not to vaccinate based on the results of her research but had read only material that cast doubt.

The first debate featured an unprepared man repeatedly shouting over a highly prepared woman

Toward the end of the debate, Trump questioned Clinton’s stamina. “I don’t believe she does have the stamina,” he said. “To be president of this country, you need tremendous stamina.”

But the irony was it was Clinton’s stamina that won this debate, and behind that stamina was her preparation. Trump grew less and less coherent as the night wore on, and his early spree of interruptions flagged as he was quickly forced onto topics where he hadn’t done the work to feel comfortable. Clinton, by contrast, grew stronger as the debate wore on, because she had prepared for everything the moderators threw at her.

There were many differences between the candidates on display in this contest, but the most consequential one was that Clinton displayed the basic personal qualities necessary to be president. Trump didn’t. She had done the work to know what she was talking about and to survive a high-stakes encounter with an unpredictable opponent. He hadn’t done the work, and it showed.

Surgeon General warns: Drinking every time Trump lies during debate could result in acute alcohol poisoning

Viewers of tonight’s debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump  who decide to drink every time Trump tells a lie could very well die of alcohol poisoning, according to the US Surgeon General.

…Medical professionals found themselves in a similar situation last year, before the GOP primary debates…. “We can’t impress enough on people about the danger of mixing alcohol and watching the GOP debates, especially with the field the Republicans are giving us this year.”

…Please do your fact-checking as responsibly as possible.

Women in Iran Mount Protest Against Bicycling Ban

Iranian women have taken to their bicycles to oppose a religious ruling banning them from riding in public places. The unexpected “fatwa,” or religious ruling, by the country’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, says a woman riding a bicycle not only attracts the attention of men, but also “exposes the society to sedition.”

Jeezum, when are those hateful old men going to die off? What a bunch of perverted assholes they come off as. If you are that threatened by someone on a bicycle? The problem isn’t the person riding the bike, the problem -and sedition to society- is 100% you.

Miss D.C. Rocked Her Natural Hair After Being Advised Not To in the Miss America Pageant

Miss District of Columbia, Cierra Jackson, in the Miss America pageant was urged to wear anything but her natural hair in this competition. Some thought that straightening her hair would increase her chances of winning the competition but Jackson had other plans. Instead of falling into mainstream media’s perception of beauty she proudly represented her beauty. Miss D.C. proudly rocked her natural kinky, curly hair and won the swimsuit portion of the competition.

I Just Found Out Canned Pumpkin Isn’t Pumpkin At All, And My Whole Life is Basically a Lie

And on the 1st world problem side of things…

I found out something extremely disappointing and concerning this week that has made me rethink most everything in my life, so I’d like to share a little PSA with the class:

Pumpkin puree is not pumpkin. It’s squash.

…As it turns out, pumpkins can be fairly stringy and watery; certain varieties of winter squash make a richer, sweeter puree that works way better for packing the now-ambiguous flavor we all love into our favorite fall dishes. Additionally, the USDA is fairly lenient with gourd terminology in general, which is why it’s perfectly legal to label a food product as “pumpkin” when, in reality, it’s made from a different variety of squash. So it’s all good now that there’s an explanation, right? NO. It’s not.

What I’m telling you is, you’ve basically been eating butternut squash pie, squash bread, and drinking SQUASH FREAKING SPICE LATTES this entire time.
