Jennifer Lawrence: “Why Do I Make Less Than My Male Co‑Stars?”

A few weeks ago at work, I spoke my mind and gave my opinion in a clear and no-bullshit way; no aggression, just blunt. The man I was working with (actually, he was working for me) said, “Whoa! We’re all on the same team here!” As if I was yelling at him. I was so shocked because nothing that I said was personal, offensive, or, to be honest, wrong. All I hear and see all day are men speaking their opinions, and I give mine in the same exact manner, and you would have thought I had said something offensive.

EU Parliament applauds as MEP Janusz Korwin-Mikke is suspended for sexist comments

Antonio Tajani issued a statement apologizing to anyone who had been hurt or offended by the MEP’s outburst:

“I will not tolerate such behaviour, in particular when it comes from someone who is expected to discharge his duties as a representative of the peoples of Europe with due dignity. By offending all women, the MEP displayed contempt for our most fundamental values.”

This drew a round of applause from the entire parliament. Korwin-Mikke will lose his daily subsistence allowance for 30 days, a total of €9,180 (£8,047) intended to cover his expenses while he attends parliament. He will also be suspended from all parliamentary work for 10 days and banned from representing the parliament for a year.

‘BBC dad’ parody imagines how a mom would handle the situation

The woman welcomes her daughter on her lap, feeds her milk and calmly continues to talk to her BBC host. When the toddler steps in, she hands him a toy.

The parody then goes on with the mum removing roast chicken from the oven, cleaning the toilet, and even defusing a bomb. And the ending is just hilarious.

Marines nude photo scandal expands to all branches of military

Marine officials say they have received reports of at least a half dozen other sites.

Beyond the criminal investigation, Pentagon officials say sites like Marines United can do real harm to the military by discouraging young women from joining the armed forces and convincing those already in uniform to get out.

Conducting yourself with such disrespect for your fellow service people should automatically equal demotions and dishonorable discharges. It endangers Americans by facilitating distrust among people who need to work together.

High heels row: MPs ‘shocked’ by women’s dress code stories

A petition that calls for a ban on forcing women to wear high heels at work is debated by MPs.

…MPs said they were “shocked” by stories submitted as part of the inquiry, which included one case of a woman who had been told to dye her hair blonde.

The government has said no employer should discriminate on gender grounds.

…Helen Jones, who chairs the Petitions Committee, said : “It is fair to say that what we found shocked us.

“We found attitudes that belonged more [to the] – I was going to say 1950s but probably the 1850s might be more accurate – than the 21st Century.

…Women should not be expected to wear things that caused discomfort or expense that a male colleague would not, she added.

“I must reiterate that the government utterly condemns such dress requirements where their effects are discriminatory.”

How Doctors Take Women’s Pain Less Seriously – The Atlantic

As we loaded into the ambulance, here’s what we didn’t know: Rachel had an ovarian cyst, a fairly common thing. But it had grown, undetected, until it was so large that it finally weighed her ovary down, twisting the fallopian tube like you’d wring out a sponge. This is called ovarian torsion, and it creates the kind of organ-failure pain few people experience and live to tell about.

…Other nurses’ reactions ranged from dismissive to condescending. “You’re just feeling a little pain, honey,” one of them told Rachel, all but patting her head.

…The average emergency-room patient in the U.S. waits 28 minutes before seeing a doctor. I later learned that at Brooklyn Hospital Center, where we were, the average wait was nearly three times as long, an hour and 49 minutes. Our wait would be much, much longer.

…The diagnosis of kidney stones—repeated by the nurses and confirmed by the attending physician’s prescribed course of treatment—was a denial of the specifically female nature of Rachel’s pain. A more careful examiner would have seen the need for gynecological evaluation; later, doctors told us that Rachel’s swollen ovary was likely palpable through the surface of her skin.  ….And every nurse’s shrug seemed to say, “Women cry—what can you do?”

Nationwide, men wait an average of 49 minutes before receiving an analgesic for acute abdominal pain. Women wait an average of 65 minutes for the same thing. Rachel waited somewhere between 90 minutes and two hours.

…Later, she’d tell me that the hydromorphone didn’t really stop the pain—just numbed it slightly. Mostly, it made her feel sedated, too tired to fight.

…If Rachel had been alone, with no one to agitate for her care, there’s no telling how long she might have waited.

It was almost another hour before we got the CT results. But when they came, they changed everything.

…That’s when we lost it. Not just because our minds filled then with words like tumor and cancer and malignant. Not just because Rachel had gone half crazy with the waiting and the pain. It was because we’d asked to wait our turn all through the day—longer than a standard office shift—only to find out we’d been an emergency all along.

…Rachel’s physical scars are healing, and she can go on the long runs she loves, but she’s still grappling with the psychic toll—what she calls “the trauma of not being seen.”

Congresswoman Grace Meng’s Menstrual Equity Bill to Make Tampons Accessible

An op-ed by Congresswoman Grace Meng.

Congresswoman Grace Meng’s Menstrual Equity Bill to Make Tampons Accessible

Wow. The fact that some women could have this problem never occurred to me. I’m not sure how any society could call itself civilized when half its members are in danger of being subjected to this type of humiliation.

Good on you, Congresswoman Meng, good on you.

Utah county GOP official resigns after criticizing equal pay bill

A Utah county Republican Party official has resigned after receiving blowback for criticizing a bill in the state legislature designed to create equal pay criteria.

Hey backwater, f’tard, inbred, moron: supporting limiting someone’s opportunities is opposite of supporting someone. So no, if you are arguing women should be paid less so they have to stay home and not work that is not supporting women. That’s actually the exact opposite of supporting women. The fact that you clearly do not get that means you are a total liability to any organization that deal with the public – let alone a political one. Sit down and keep your backwards trap shut, son.

Utah Republican argues against equal pay for women: It’s ‘bad for families’ and society

In a letter criticizing a bill that addresses pay gap in the workforce, a Utah Republican said that men have traditionally earned more than women and, citing “simple economics,” argued that things should stay that way.

Backwards, inbred moron.

..And beyond that, what a myopic asshole.

If you’re going to be that self absorbed and stupid it’s probably best not to open your ignorant little mouth.

Oklahoma Lawmakers Want Men to Approve All Abortions

The first, Rep. George Faught’s House Bill 1549, was returning for a second year. Under the measure, a woman would be blocked from aborting a fetus because it has — or is suspected of having — a genetic abnormality, regardless of how early she sought termination.

…HB 1441, that was even more disturbing, devoid of any nuance and completely unconstitutional. Written by another of the chamber’s freshmen, Rep. Justin Humphrey, the legislation would require a woman seeking an abortion first to obtain written permission from her sexual partner. It would also require her to provide his name to her doctor and would forestall the procedure if the man wanted the opportunity to challenge paternity. The U.S. Supreme Court struck down a similar provision in 1992.

…Humphrey said that the original intention of the bill was to ensure that fathers are involved in supporting a child from conception. “I was wanting fathers to have to pay child support at the beginning,”

….Ultimately, he said, his intent was to let men have a say. “I believe one of the breakdowns in our society is that we have excluded the man out of all of these types of decisions,” he said. “I understand that they feel like that is their body,” he said of women. “I feel like it is a separate — what I call them is, is you’re a ‘host.’ ”
