Crews remove Baltimore’s Confederate statues overnight

Crews removed Baltimore’s four Confederate monuments quickly and quietly in the dark of night.

…On Monday night, the City Council cited events in Charlottesville, Virginia, when it adopted a resolution calling for the immediate destruction of Confederate monuments.

The mayor said the City Charter gives her the authority to act as a matter of public safety. …Local protesters vowed on Sunday to tear down the Lee and Jackson statue if the city didn’t act. The mayor said there are more appropriate places to put the statues,

“There are Confederate cemeteries here in Maryland. There are Confederate cemeteries all across the nation where people have inquired about them.”

The mayor suggests plaques take the place of the statues to explain what used to be there and why they were removed.

…[Mayor Pugh] said removal began around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and ended around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, and she watched the process in person. The monuments have been taken somewhere outside the city, but it was not specified where.

The mayor did not get permission from the Maryland Historical Trust to remove three of the statues; however, under the circumstances, the trust said it will work with the city to relocate the statues and restore the sites.

Hurt and Angry, Charlottesville Tries to Regroup From Violence

And at City Hall, a planned news conference by Jason Kessler, the white nationalist who organized Saturday’s rally, came to an abrupt end when a man wearing a plaid shirt punched him.

“Jason Kessler has been bringing hate to our town for months and has been endangering the lives of people of color and endangering other lives in my community,” the man, Jeff Winder, said in an interview later. “Free speech does not protect hate speech.”

Hurt and Angry, Charlottesville Tries to Regroup From Violence – NYTimes.com

Well, I would have said free speech does not protect you from the consequences of people hearing what you say and reacting to it but, still, you go, Jeff Winder! Punch all the Nazis. Every single Nazi. Every single time.

(And if you want to split hairs about alt-right vs. white nationalist vs Nazi? You’re missing the forest for the trees.)

MLMs like LuLaRoe are sending people into debt and psychological crisis

…points out that when you onboard someone underneath you, especially if they live in your town or are in your friendship group, you are essentially creating a competitor. It’s as if you open a Subway sandwich shop and then encourage your neighbor to open a Subway right next door—and everyone is already sick of sandwiches.

…Whether they realize it or not, consultant leaders often use time-honored cult tactics of denial and blame to keep women within their sorority. A famous series of experiments from the 1950s conducted by Soloman Asch in England showed that three out of four people will deny evidence right in front of them if the majority says it’s not true. In the study, individuals were placed in groups where they were constantly contradicted by other members. When this happened over a length of time, they would start to agree with the majority—even though it was clear that the opposite was true. In MLMs, “you’re trained to avoid people who question whether this is a viable business or not,” Brooks says. “Which is exactly the same technique that cults use—they try to isolate you from people who question your belief system. I’ve been contacted by a number of people who deal with cult survivors, and some of their clients are former MLM people.”

Even when consultants wake up to the fact they’ve been hoodwinked, many don’t warn their friends to stay away. That’s because if you speak out against any of LuLaRoe’s rules or mishaps, the community could publicly shame and harass you for being negative. “I can’t believe you call yourself a Christian,” one retailer wrote to someone trying to sound the alarm. “Where is the Jesus in you? I have to block you due to your constant-gross-delusional-uneducated opinions of LLR.” If you reveal you are struggling to make sales, you might be told to stop playing the victim, that you’re not putting in enough effort, to be more enthusiastic, and, of course, to buy more inventory.

…In other words, it’s not the system that’s broken—you’re just not trying hard enough.

…Stern was taught ways to unload her unwanted stock on unsuspecting buyers by her group’s leaders. “You have to be creative about how you sell it,” she says. Stern would bundle 10 pairs of leggings together—nine less desirable ones and one unicorn pattern—into “mystery sales,” where the first 10 women to comment “sold” would purchase a random pair, but only one would get the coveted leggings. She feels guilty about using this psychological gambling trick, but it worked.

…For a portion of independent retailers, LuLaRoe is to economic opportunity as Goop is to wellness: It’s for ladies who already have it all. The ability to throw down $12,000 to start a LuLaRoe business and work 30 hours a week sometimes comes from a place of privilege, not desperation.

…This isn’t a story about leggings, however. It’s not even a story about LuLaRoe. This is the story of rural and suburban disenfranchisement and the MLMs that offer desperate American women a chance at clawing their way out. They’ve become part of the fabric of suburban America, as cherished and inevitable as barbecues and the county fair. Regional newspapers are rife with announcements for fundraisers for children with cancer and elementary-school fetes that promote LuLaRoe pop-up shops. Not buying a pair of leggings can be read as being unsupportive of your friends—or not chipping in for a local kid’s chemotherapy. It’s a genius manipulation of rural and suburban American societal norms.

New Orleans flooded as pumps failed, worrying residents about what will happen when the next hurricane hits

Residents worry the city’s infrastructure is poised to fail: “If we get hit by another Katrina, the city will be gone.”

… thunderstorm dropped as much as nine inches of rain in just four hours. The ensuing flood overwhelmed the city’s pump system and covered much of central New Orleans in several feet of water, taking 14 hours to drain and prompting 200 “life-threatening” emergency calls, according to city records.

…Unlike during Hurricane Katrina, the problem over the weekend wasn’t the 133 miles of levees and flood walls that protect New Orleans from the tidal surges of the Gulf of Mexico or Lake Pontchartrain, which hangs over the northern and eastern edge of the city. Instead, parts of New Orleans were underwater because the city’s hundreds of miles of drains and pumps couldn’t bail rainwater fast enough.

Though the water finally receded this week, the aftermath has thrown the New Orleans government and its municipal water and sewage authority into turmoil, reviving long-standing concerns that natural disasters here have been made worse by inconsistent leadership.

…the Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans promised that all 121 drainage pumps were working properly during the storm. They said the flooding was simply caused by too much rain for the system to handle.

By Tuesday, as community skepticism deepened, the board acknowledged that eight pumps were either broken or out of service for maintenance when the rain began. Power shortages also hampered pump operations in some neighborhoods.

As a result, pumps in some hard-hit areas were operating at half of capacity, according to Joseph Becker, the water board’s superintendent.

…In an uptown neighborhood, some of the flooding might also have been exacerbated by a Corps of Engineers project designed to limit future flooding. Contractors digging new drainage culverts left three 70-foot holes in metal panels that lead to the Peoples Avenue Canal, allowing water to back up into the neighborhood, said Col. Michael N. Clancy, commander of the corps’ New Orleans district.

…Residents say many storm drains and canals are too clogged with debris to be effective. At Tuesday’s council meeting, public works officials said the city has only enough money to clear 68 of the 1,300 miles of canals this year.

National Butterfly Center staff discovered workers with chainsaws on the center’s private sanctuary clearing the way for Trump’s border wall in South Texas.

…The founder of the center wasn’t notified in writing by the U.S. Department of Justice, as required by law. Instead, he found out when a group of workers with chainsaws began tearing through specially planted habitat on the privately owned land.

Ruby Bridges, the Little Black Girl Who Desegregated New Orleans Schools, Is Only 62. Let That Sink In.

…After exhausting all stalling tactics, the Legislature had to relent, and the designated schools were to be integrated that November. Fearing there might be some civil disturbances, the federal district court judge requested the U.S. government send federal marshals to New Orleans to protect the children.

On the morning of November 14, 1960, federal marshals drove Ruby and her mother five blocks to her new school. (biography.com)

West Virginia governor Jim Justice announcing Republican party switch at Trump rally.

Here are some facts about Jim Justice:

  • He’s a billionaire who inherited a coal business from his father.According to Forbes, he is the richest man in West Virginia.
  • He became a registered Democrat in February 2015, shortly before he announced his entry into a the governor’s race. Before that, he was a Republican.
  • He not only owns a resort at which the PGA Tour holds an event, he owns a resort at which the PGA Tour holds an event on a golf course called “The Old White Course.”

In other words, the really remarkable thing here is that Jim Justice—an old white golf man who inherited a coal fortune, for God’s sake—was ever a Democrat at all.

Food stamp program works with fresh food farmers markets

Kenney’s on food stamps now, and he said he still wants to eat healthy but can’t afford fresh greens anymore. That’s where the tokens come in. The market match program operates at farmers markets all across the state, funded by a combination of charitable donations and a federal grant.

Jill Hall, director of programs at Seacoast Eat Local, one of the nonprofits that runs the token tables at markets, said the program is about knocking down financial barriers to fresh, healthy food.

…Kenney was using a program called the Granite State Market Match. When food stamp recipients come to farmers markets, the program will match, dollar for dollar, whatever they spend on fruits and veggies. Ten dollars in food stamps will get you $20 of tomatoes.

White Lady From Hell Moves to Harlem, Immediately Goes to War Against Ice Cream

When Black Hair Violates The Dress Code

For wearing their hair in braids, two teenagers were threatened with suspension at their charter school. Similar incidents show that strict dress codes can punish students for their racial identity.

…According to Colleen Cook, administrators at Mystic Valley have routinely reprimanded black students for dress code violations involving hair.

Other black girls have been pulled out of class, she says, lined up, asked if they had hair extensions and given detention if they did.

Colleen remembers when one student, who wore her hair in its natural texture, was taken out of class and told that she would need to relax, or chemically straighten, her hair before returning to school the next day.

In defense of their daughters, the Cooks brought in a yearbook to show school leaders the many white female students with hair extensions and dyed hair.

But, the Cooks say, the administration didn’t see that those students were in violation of the dress code, stating those hair alterations weren’t as obvious.

…”I feel like the school is pushing us to raise them as white children, but that’s not who they are or who they’re going to be.”

When Black Hair Violates The Dress Code : NPR Ed : NPR

Criminalizing being black starts at an early age. I hope the Cooks sue the school into stone age. If the school system insists on disrupting the education of young people who happen to be black, then in all fairness everyone else’s education needs to be disrupted as well.

Teacher at Mormon University Loses Job Over Pro-LGBT Facebook Post

Ruthie Robertson, an adjunct professor at Brigham Young University-Idaho, refused to retract her supportive Pride Month post.

…She mentioned that the Bible’s book of Leviticus, which has verses often used to condemn homosexuality, also prohibits the wearing of garments made from two kinds of fabric, and teaches that women are unclean during their menstrual periods and for a time after childbirth.

“None of this is archaic, sexist, or totally illogical at all though, right?” Robertson wrote. “God commanded these things, so we need to make sure we make these into policies as well! What I’m trying convey is that we like to pick and choose from the scriptures, and if we choose to use the Old Testament as a defense for condemning homosexuality … there’s a whole lot more we need to be condemning as well.”

“This is my official announcement and declaration that I believe heterosexuality and homosexuality are both natural and neither is sinful,” she continued. “I will never support the phrase ‘love the sinner, hate the sin’ because that ‘sin’ is part of who that person is. Homosexuality and transgenderism are not sins; if God made us, and those are part of who we are then God created that as well.”

Robertson, a lifelong Mormon and BYUI alum, added that the LDS Church has changed policies on other issues, so she hopes it will someday change its approach to LGBT people. “I will always and forever stand up for the equality of the LGBT community,” she concluded. “Sexuality and gender are not binary, they are on a spectrum and that’s how we were made. Stand up for humanity, love people because of who they are … not despite who they are. Trump can break the tradition of June being LGBT pride month, but I’m still going to celebrate it … this month and every month to follow. #LGBTPrideMonth.”

Democratic state Sen. Mark Manendo resigns after sexual harassment investigation

The Senate Democratic Caucus issued a statement Tuesday saying an independent investigator found at least 14 incidents of inappropriate contact during the 2017 legislative session, as well as instances of misconduct in past sessions. While 58 people were interviewed, the caucus said it will not make the report public in order to maintain privacy for witnesses.
