AP EXCLUSIVE: Toxic waste sites flooded in Houston area, EPA not on the scene

Long a center of the nation’s petrochemical industry, the Houston metro area has more than a dozen Superfund sites, designated by the Environmental Protection Agency as being among America’s most intensely contaminated places. Many are now flooded, with the risk that waters were stirring dangerous sediment.

…The Associated Press surveyed seven Superfund sites in and around Houston during the flooding. All had been inundated with water, in some cases many feet deep.

…AP journalists used a boat to document the condition of one flooded Houston-area Superfund site, but accessed others with a vehicle or on foot. The EPA did not immediately respond to questions about why its personnel had not yet been able to do so.

The disaster in Crosby is purely man-made.

Explosions and flames erupted into the air at a chemical plant in Crosby very early Thursday morning. Floodwaters had knocked out the cooling system needed to prevent organic peroxides from breaking down, and also blocked any path for workers to get back to the site and prevent the disaster.

Now the surrounding residents, living 25 miles northeast of downtown Houston, have been instructed to shut their doors and windows, turn off air conditioners and do everything possible to avoid breathing in the acrid smoke and fumes pouring out of the plant owned by Arkema Inc.

…Exposure to the Arkema fire has sent 15 sheriff’s deputies to the hospital as of this writing, yet the company still won’t explain the specific sort of adverse health effects that people should expect from the emissions. The company also couldn’t answer pointed question by Dempsey about why volatile materials weren’t neutralized before workers fled the site.

Joel Osteen faces criticism on social media for closing Houston megachurch’s doors amid Harvey

But on Sunday, in response to requests that the church, which can hold more than 16,000, be opened for evacuees, Lakewood Church posted on Facebook that it is “inaccessible due to severe flooding” and subsequently directed displaced residents to nearby Houston shelters.

…The Facebook post courted criticism on social media, where photos appeared to suggest that the massive building, which was once home to the NBA’s Houston Rockets, had not been damaged by the torrential rains afflicting the area.

Dear Middle America,

Stop being so fucking stupid. If your Church’s leader preaches a gospel of money, don’t expect him to open the doors to save you unless there is a monetary profit in it for him. (Duh!)

New Orleans flooded as pumps failed, worrying residents about what will happen when the next hurricane hits

Residents worry the city’s infrastructure is poised to fail: “If we get hit by another Katrina, the city will be gone.”

… thunderstorm dropped as much as nine inches of rain in just four hours. The ensuing flood overwhelmed the city’s pump system and covered much of central New Orleans in several feet of water, taking 14 hours to drain and prompting 200 “life-threatening” emergency calls, according to city records.

…Unlike during Hurricane Katrina, the problem over the weekend wasn’t the 133 miles of levees and flood walls that protect New Orleans from the tidal surges of the Gulf of Mexico or Lake Pontchartrain, which hangs over the northern and eastern edge of the city. Instead, parts of New Orleans were underwater because the city’s hundreds of miles of drains and pumps couldn’t bail rainwater fast enough.

Though the water finally receded this week, the aftermath has thrown the New Orleans government and its municipal water and sewage authority into turmoil, reviving long-standing concerns that natural disasters here have been made worse by inconsistent leadership.

…the Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans promised that all 121 drainage pumps were working properly during the storm. They said the flooding was simply caused by too much rain for the system to handle.

By Tuesday, as community skepticism deepened, the board acknowledged that eight pumps were either broken or out of service for maintenance when the rain began. Power shortages also hampered pump operations in some neighborhoods.

As a result, pumps in some hard-hit areas were operating at half of capacity, according to Joseph Becker, the water board’s superintendent.

…In an uptown neighborhood, some of the flooding might also have been exacerbated by a Corps of Engineers project designed to limit future flooding. Contractors digging new drainage culverts left three 70-foot holes in metal panels that lead to the Peoples Avenue Canal, allowing water to back up into the neighborhood, said Col. Michael N. Clancy, commander of the corps’ New Orleans district.

…Residents say many storm drains and canals are too clogged with debris to be effective. At Tuesday’s council meeting, public works officials said the city has only enough money to clear 68 of the 1,300 miles of canals this year.

Fearing there might be some civil disturbances, the federal district court judge requested the U.S. government send federal marshals to New Orleans to protect the children.

Confederate monuments’ removal bring cry to lynch Louisiana officials

A Mississippi lawmaker recommended lynching over the weekend for New Orleans’ leaders who have had four Confederate monuments dismantled.

…In a Saturday Facebook post, state Rep. Karl Oliver, a Republican from Winona, also compared the actions of Crescent City officials to Nazis.

New Orleans removes monuments to ‘lost cause of the Confederacy’

…“Three weeks ago, we began the process of removing statues erected to honor the ‘Lost Cause of the Confederacy,’ ” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu (D). “This morning, we continue our march to reconciliation by removing the Jefferson Davis Confederate statue from its pedestal of reverence.”

…[Some supporters of the statues’ removal] marched in a second-line parade to the traffic circle where Lee’s statue stands …to protest the monument’s place in the circle. …They were met by Confederate-flag wavers keeping vigil there, some wearing riot gear.

…At Lee Circle, there was some yelling between the pro-monument and anti-monument crowds and some icy stares. Much of the fury and the verbal challenges came from the monument defenders, who appeared to be outnumbered by the second-line participants by at least two to one.

~~~
…Davis was captured in the waning days of the war by Union soldiers after he fled the Confederate capital in Richmond.
“His cause went down in disastrous defeat and left the South impoverished for generations,” Smithsonian Magazine noted, adding: “Many Americans in Davis’s own time and in later generations considered him an incompetent leader, if not a traitor.”
…As the Davis statue came down, a group of proponents for removal who had been largely absent from the area around the Davis memorial since a series of verbal clashes and minor skirmishes with monument defenders, chanted “Na-na, na, Naa-na, goodbye,” according to people at the scene.
The group stood behind police metal barricades, near the corner of Canal St. and Jefferson Davis Parkway, on an expansive grassy median known in New Orleans as “the neutral ground,” a reference to the way that the space once served as a conflict-free zone where the Spanish and French settlers who once battled for political, economic and social for control of this city engaged in trade.
Across the intersection, monument defenders watched in a state of sad disbelief.
…Hours after the statue was removed by crane, the Times-Picayune reported that crews were still at the site, “attempting to [re]move the pedestal on the statue sat. … It appears [getting rid of] the pedestal is turning out to be a difficult task. [emphasis: mine]
Jefferson Davis Statue Gone From Its Pedestal In New Orleans
As workers slung a strap around the statue’s waist and lifted it off its pedestal, “at least 100 people cheered from across the street, outnumbering the few dozen protesters, some waving Confederate flags.”
…”We would have preferred it to be in the daytime,” monument opponent Malcolm Suber told Kaplan-Levenson, “so everybody could see it in the light of day. But we’ll take this.”
Like an earlier removal, this one was performed in the dark because, …of “death threats against city officials and contractors.”
Before the monument could be removed, police had to clear the immediate area of demonstrators — both supporters of the monuments and those who want them taken away. [In a perhaps uniquely New Orleans fashion,] barricades [creating a “neutral zone”] were used to keep the sides separated.
New Orleans Begins Confederate-Monument Removal
New Orleans is severing its ties to the racist Confederate history that lingers in the city by removing several Confederate statues. Early Monday morning, city workers were to begin to take down the statues while it was still dark to avoid clashing with those wanting to preserve the [white-washing.]
New Orleans Begins Confederate-Monument Removal
Yeah you right! Good on ya, New Orleans.
In response to a LOT of comments I saw when the mayor went live to talk about this:
1.) Yes confederates were traitors. (What are you, f’ing stupid?) They were literally waging war against the US government. How much more of a perfect definition of treason do you want?
2.) No one is erasing history. They are just refusing to elevate a totally twisted and slanted version of it above the truth anymore.
3.) You want to boycott New Orleans because of this? Great! If that’s how you feel nobody wants your backwards, hateful, fucktard self on their streets anyways. Please, stay where you are. No need to slither out from under your rock, trash!
And finally, wooohoooo!!
Landrieu: Remaining monuments to come down ‘sooner rather than later’ | wwltv.com
New Orleans has begun the process of removing its Confederate-era monuments with the removal of the monument to the Battle of Liberty Place.
…“The removal of these statues sends a clear and unequivocal message to the people of New Orleans and the nation: New Orleans celebrates our diversity, inclusion and tolerance,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu.
“Relocating these Confederate monuments is not about taking something away from someone else. This is not about politics, blame or retaliation. This is not a naïve quest to solve all our problems at once. This is about showing the whole world that we as a city and as a people are able to acknowledge, understand, reconcile — and most importantly– choose a better future. We can remember these divisive chapters in our history in a museum or other facility where they can be put in context – and that’s where these statues belong.”
…Landrieu said the memorials were coming down during the wee hours because of death threats and intimidation from some of those who want the monuments to stay and to minimize city disruption.
…New Orleans historical records reflect that the battle was fought between a group known as the ‘White League’ and Reconstruction government forces. A few thousand members of the White League fought against members of the local police, killing some of them in the uprising.
“The statue was put up to honor the killing of police officers by white supremacists,” said Landrieu at a press briefing shortly after the monument was removed.
Landrieu: Remaining monuments to come down ‘sooner rather than later’ | wwltv.com
“I believe more strongly today than ever that in New Orleans we should truly remember all of our history, not some of it. that means we will no longer allow the Confederacy to literally be put on a pedestal in the heart of our city.” – Mayor Landrieu
Amen.
ACLU Report Details Horrors Suffered by Orleans Parish Prisoners in Wake of Hurricane Katrina
The report documents the experiences of thousands of men, women and children who were abandoned at Orleans Parish Prison (OPP) in the days after the storm. “The prisoners inside the Orleans Parish Prison suffered some of the worst horrors of Hurricane Katrina,” said Eric Balaban, a staff attorney for the National Prison Project. “Because society views prisoners as second-class citizens, their stories have largely gone unnoticed and therefore untold.”
…The ACLU report describes a history of neglect at Orleans Parish Prison, one of the most dangerous and mismanaged jails in the country. This culture of neglect was evident in the days before Katrina, when the sheriff declared that the prisoners would remain “where they belong,” despite the mayor’s decision to declare the city’s first-ever mandatory evacuation. OPP even accepted prisoners, including juveniles as young as 10, from other facilities to ride out the storm. As floodwaters rose in the OPP buildings, power was lost, and entire buildings were plunged into darkness. Deputies left their posts wholesale, leaving behind prisoners in locked cells, some standing in sewage-tainted water up to their chests.
…Prisoners went days without food, water and ventilation, and deputies admit that they received no emergency training and were entirely unaware of any evacuation plan. Even some prison guards were left locked in at their posts to fend for themselves, unable to provide assistance to prisoners in need.
Among the people profiled in the ACLU report are:
– Ivy Gisclair, who was being held at OPP for $700 in traffic violations (mostly parking tickets) and had never been in any serious trouble with the law. After days in OPP following the storm, Ivy was transferred to Hunt, where he witnessed stabbings, rapes and countless fights. Ivy was finally transferred to Bossier Parish Maximum Security Prison. His release date came and went. When he asked a guard about it, he was pepper sprayed, repeatedly shocked with a Taser, beaten by multiple guards, and put in solitary confinement with no clothes. Ivy was released in an orange prison jumpsuit at a gas station by the side of the road, three weeks after his scheduled release date. It was the day of Hurricane Rita.
– Renard Reed, a guard at OPP’s psychiatric ward who reported to work before the hurricane out of a sense of camaraderie and shared responsibility. Like many other guards, Renard was locked in during his shift to prevent desertion, and was then ordered to go to the roof with a shotgun and shoot anyone trying to leave one of the flooded buildings. He was still stranded at the prison long after the prisoners were evacuated.
– Ashley George, a 13-year-old girl housed in OPP’s Youth Center, who was moved to an area adjacent to an adult male holding area where the men watched her use the toilet. As the building began to flood, Ashley spent days in water up to her neck. Adult prisoners rescued Ashley and the other children from the waters. After being taken to the bridge for evacuation, Ashley was lucky enough to be given a bag of potato chips and water. She reports again being forced to relieve herself publicly and that pregnant girls received no assistance or treatment.
All these years later it still sickens me to think of how few people faced any consequences for the inhumane and dangerous treatment of others during the storm.
After Facebook rants, Corpus Christi mayor resigns 37 days into term
…Questions raised by local media after his campaign literature included on his educational resume a bachelor’s degree in engineering, though he refused to say where he earned it. Hours before resigning, he admitted in an interview with KIII-TV3 that he did not possess the engineering degree, though he possessed separate bachelor’s and master’s degrees and was employed as an electrical engineer at Sikorski Aeronautics for nine years.
McQueen repeatedly referred to himself during his campaign as an “aerospace engineer.”
Questions were also raised about McQueen’s hand-picked chief of staff, Shari Douglas, who also served as McQueen’s campaign treasurer. Public records show McQueen and Douglas list the same address as their home residence, but McQueen refused to answer questions about the nature of their relationship while naming her to a $60,000-per-year job as his top adviser.
New Orleans cop had secret life for years as serial sexual predator, police say
White’s star in the department dimmed somewhat after he was one of several officers involved in the controversial 2009 shooting of Adolph Grimes III in the 6th Ward. The Police Department later cleared him and seven other officers in the case.
Typical. The police always clear and cover up for the violent crimes of their own.
According to jail records, White was rebooked Monday on first-degree rape, four counts of second-degree rape, one count of simple kidnapping, one count of false imprisonment, two counts of indecent behavior with a juvenile, two counts of molestation of a juvenile, four counts of sexual battery and one count of possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
The gun count adds another element to the allegations against White. Police alleged in a warrant that they found a .38-caliber handgun with an obliterated serial number inside a bag in his locker at the 2nd District Station.
When queried, police said, “White stated he received the gun from a citizen in 2007, and he placed the gun in his bag and he forgot about it.”
1 Dead And 9 Injured After Shooting In New Orleans’ French Quarter | The Huffington Post
I am seeing this story on facebook and to be honest, it’s kind of pissing me off. Posts with headlines like, “Ohhhh no!”
Oh, no… what? Why? Because gun violence in New Orleans is a daily tragedy.
What makes this different than the run of the mill, every day shooting in the Crescent City? What makes this deserve more attention than any other on-average-more-than-once-a-day shooting in Orleans parish?
There have been 160+ murders in New Orleans since 2016 began, did you post “Ohhhhh nooooo,” for all of them too???
