This week in Mormon Land

Women can act as witnesses to temple sealings and that any baptized member (starting as young as age 8) can serve as a “witness of the baptism of a living person.”

In addition, any temple recommend holder (male or female) can act as a witness at a “proxy baptism for a deceased person” in a Latter-day Saint temple. This change also extends to holders of so-called limited-use recommends. These are often teenage girls and boys.

…He discussed “kinship” relationships, pointing to the various types of marriages in church history, such as plural, proxy, convenience and successive sealings. Many of these kinships didn’t focus on reproduction, meaning it hasn’t always been seen as essential for a relationship.

This teen wasn’t allowed into her homecoming dance because she was wearing a jumpsuit

Despite her best efforts, she hadn’t found the perfect dress. But, no worries, she thought. She already had a jumpsuit in her closet, and she could easily dress it up for the dance.

Or so she thought. When the 17-year-old arrived at the Tampa Bay Homeschool homecoming dance on September 27, the event planner stopped her. She wasn’t allowed in.

The reason? She wasn’t wearing a dress.

Since there is no school distric t involved they can’t be sued to oblivion to make a point the tax-payers would never allow them to forget. In lieu of that the event planner should be sued and charged pressed for discrimination in a criminal court. People who treat young women like this should PAY DEARLY.

NASA Announces First All-Female Spacewalk After Previous One Canceled

Astronauts Christina Koch and the newly arrived Jessica Meir will venture out Oct. 21 to plug in new, upgraded batteries for the solar power system. It will be the fourth of five spacewalks for battery work.”

… “The latest class of NASA astronauts, selected in 2013, includes four women and four men. What’s most interesting … is not the gender parity. Two of the women have something the earliest female astronauts couldn’t: Military backgrounds. One of them, Anne McClain, is an Army major who flew helicopters during combat missions in Iraq.”

Research: When Women Are on Boards, Male CEOs Are Less Overconfident

Having women on the board results better acquisition and investment decisions and in less aggressive risk-taking, yielding benefits for shareholders. What’s less clear is why these effects happen.

Our research suggests one potential reason: Having female board members helps temper the overconfidence of male CEOs, improving overall decision making for the company.

…One benefit of having female directors on the board is a greater diversity of viewpoints, which is purported to improve the quality of board deliberations, especially when complex issues are involved, because different perspectives can increase the amount of information available. At the same time, research has found that female directors tend to be less conformist and more likely to express their independent views than male directors because they do not belong to old-boy networks.

…Our study has two important policy implications. First, it suggests that female board representation matters more in certain industries, because some industries have more overconfident CEOs. Second, our findings suggest female board representation can be especially beneficial in helping firms weather crises. Overall, our research supports the view that having women on boards improves strategic decision making and benefits firms.

Hillary Rodham Clinton & Chelsea Clinton on “Gutsy Women” and Trump

No one looms larger, for Hillary Clinton, than Eleanor Roosevelt: “When I ended up being first lady she was one of the people that most inspired me, because of how she tried to keep thinking about those who were left out, left behind, marginalized.”

Pauley said, “You write about discovering that her husband had had an affair with his secretary. This was devastating, and she offers Franklin a divorce, which he rejects. And you write, ‘She decided to stay in the marriage parenthetically, which can be, as I know well, a gutsy decision.’ You had to discuss with your daughter putting that in [the book]. What did you say?”

“Well, part of the reason that I admire Eleanor Roosevelt is the way she handled that happening to her,” said Hillary. “And I say, look, when something happens in your marriage, as I know well, it can be gutsy to leave, it can be gutsy to stay. I felt like I had learned so much from her that I wanted to share that with the reader.”

And Chelsea’s response? “It’s my mom’s story to tell. I’ve always felt that way.”

…”I believe he knows he’s an illegitimate president,” said Hillary. “He knows. He knows that there were a bunch of different reasons why the election turned out the way it did. And I take full responsibility for those parts of it that I should. But hey, it was like applying for a job and getting 66 million letters of recommendation, and losing to a corrupt human tornado. And so, I know that he knows that this wasn’t on the level. I don’t know that we’ll ever know everything that happened.

“But clearly, we know a lot, and are learning more every day. And history will probably sort it all out. So of course, he’s obsessed with me. And I believe that it’s a guilty conscience (insomuch as he has a conscience).”

Are there any differences in the development of boys’ and girls’ brains?

It is important to emphasize that these findings describe only the average differences between boys and girls. In fact, the range of abilities within either gender is much greater than the difference between the “average girl” and the “average boy.” In other words, there are plenty of boys with excellent verbal skills, and girls with excellent visual-spatial ability. While it can be helpful for parents and teachers to understand the different tendencies of the two sexes, we should not expect all children to conform to these norms.

…Genes and hormones set the ball rolling, but they do not fully account for sex differences in children’s brains. Experience also plays a fundamental role.

Sexist Airways boss in ‘heartfelt apology’ for sexist remark

Asked at a news conference on Tuesday about female employment among Middle East airlines and whether his job could be done by a woman, Mr al Baker said: “Of course it has to be led by a man, because it is a very challenging position”.

…In 2017, he apologised after calling US flight attendants “grandmothers” during a trade row with US airlines, prompting an airline union to accuse him of sexism and age discrimination.

…In a statement on Wednesday, Mr al-Baker said Qatar  [Sexist] Airways fully supported [giving lipservice to] gender equality.

American Airlines sorry after ‘telling woman to cover up’ – BBC News

She alleged a flight attendant first asked her to step off the plane, then described her outfit as “inappropriate” to fly and asked if she had a jacket to “cover up” with.

…After attempts to defend her outfit apparently failed and her son become upset, Dr Rowe said she felt forced to wrap a blanket around her waist and return to her seat feeling “humiliated”.

…”Our bodies are over sexualized as women and we [are forced to] ADJUST to make everyone around us comfortable.”

“I’ve seen white women with much shorter shorts board a plane without a blink of an eye.”

On Tuesday the airline said they had apologised to Dr Rowe and her son and refunded their travel.

‘Get real’: Senior Democrats shut down Kavanaugh impeachment push – POLITICO

“We’ve got to get beyond this ‘impeachment is the answer to every problem.’ It’s not realistic,” Durbin said. “If that’s how we are identified in Congress, as the impeachment Congress, we run the risk that people will feel we’re ignoring the issues that mean a lot to them as families.”

…“Mitch McConnell would block any impeachment. So that’s a moot point,” said Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), a former Judiciary chairman. He said the lesson to be learned is not to rush lifetime confirmations.

…Many Democrats are not eager to wade into a battle that energizes conservatives, who quickly dismissed Democrats’ impeachment calls. Though the effort to oust Kavanaugh is popular on the left and quickly became a litmus test in the presidential primary, Republicans indicated they relish the return of an issue they believe helped them keep the Senate in 2018.

Brett Kavanaugh: New claims detonate in heat of 2020 election – CNNPolitics

Two Times reporters who wrote the book said they corroborated a prior claim of sexual misconduct against Kavanaugh. They also concluded the FBI interviewed none of the potential witnesses, throwing new scrutiny on White House officials and Republicans who strong armed his confirmation last year.

The book also contains a former male classmate’s new allegation that the authors say was corroborated by two sources. The authors reported the former classmate came forward to the FBI and senators concerning an incident he witnessed and said the FBI did not investigate the claim.

…In practice, there is a minuscule chance that Kavanaugh would be convicted of any impeachment charges brought by the Democratic House, given the need for a two-thirds majority in the Republican-held Senate.

Teen Egyptian girl’s case puts legal system under spotlight

The prosecution of a 15-year-old girl who killed a bus driver after he allegedly tried to rape her has reignited debate over the treatment of women in Egypt’s legal system, including the practice of virginity tests and blaming victims of sexual violence.

…During her interrogation, the girl said she was on a date with her boyfriend before riding the bus — a statement that could easily undermine her reputation and probably her credibility in conservative Egyptian society, where dating is frowned upon. Her boyfriend, along with a friend of his, are in custody pending investigations into any potential links to the crime.

…After her detention, the girl was required to undergo a vaginal test which determined she was a virgin — which in the Egyptian context could be viewed as helpful to her case.

…In conservative areas, relatives celebrate a new bride’s loss of virginity by brandishing a bloody sheet in public, a practice they believe affirms the family’s honor.

…Sexual harassment, mostly ranging from catcalls to occasional pinching or grabbing, is rampant in Egypt. Polls have found that most men and women in the conservative Muslim country believe it is justified if women dress “provocatively” in public.

…Unlawful virginity examinations garnered attention in 2011 when several women said they were detained by military personnel and forced to undergo virginity tests while protesting the interim military government that took over the country after the ouster of former President Hosni Mubarak.

In Alaska hometown, Native women say police ignored rapes

Susie reported to Nome police that she had been assaulted and went with the investigating officer to the hospital, where a forensic nurse was prepared to perform a sexual assault exam.

But the officer told the nurse not to bother, according to a hospital record that Susie released to The Associated Press.

…Rape survivors and their supporters told the AP that the city’s police department has often failed to investigate sexual assaults or keep survivors informed about what, if anything, is happening with their cases.

Survivors and advocates contend that Nome police pay less attention and investigate less aggressively when sexual assaults are reported by Alaska Native women. More than half of Nome’s population is Alaska Native, largely of Yupik heritage or — like Susie — of Inupiaq heritage. All of its police department’s sworn officers are non-Native.

Although Chiarelli offered to split his fee, prompting the studio to approach Lim with a more equal bid, Lim stood firm on her decision.

“Pete has been nothing but incredibly gracious, but what I make shouldn’t be dependent on the generosity of the white-guy writer,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.

Teen Swimmer Disqualified Because Her School-Issued Swimsuit Broke Modesty Rule

The young girl, a 17-year-old state championship swimmer at Dimond High School in Anchorage, was wearing the school-issued swimsuit that every other girl on the team was wearing and yet she was the only one disqualified.

…The disqualification quickly stirred controversy in the Anchorage community, with some pointing to the fact that the swimmer is nonwhite and “curvier” than most others on the team.

…The teen at the center of the controversy has two other sisters who are on the swim team. All three have reportedly experienced similar body-shaming in Anchorage’s swimming community. Langford wrote that parents of other swimmers on the team have been heard saying that “for the sake of their sons” the mother of the three swimmers should “cover up her daughters.”
