Insults, threats and ‘Godfather’ impressions: Feds parade Roger Stone witness-tampering evidence

Prosecutors had called Credico to the witness stand to explain how Stone repeatedly used a reference to a “Godfather” film in urging him to clam up in response to inquiries from congressional investigators.

…[Stone] bragged about having a “back channel” to the WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange long before ever contacting Credico about the issue.

…In dealings with the House Intelligence Committee, Stone …never disclosed that he had made earlier efforts to dispatch a right-wing journalist, Jerome Corsi, to gather damaging Hillary Clinton emails from Assange.

…Credico warned Stone that he could be prosecuted for perjury for giving incorrect testimony to lawmakers. Stone replied with several threats directed at Credico and his therapy dog, Bianca.

“I’m going to take that dog away from you. Not a fucking thing you can do about it either because you are a weak piece of shit,” he wrote in one. And in another, Stone said, “Let’s get it on. Prepare to die cocksucker.”

…Trump and Stone spoke on several occasions as the longtime conservative activist worked diligently to gain information about the stolen Democratic emails and prod WikiLeaks to release them.

…Stone testified he had no relevant records about that critical time period, and he denied having contact with the Trump campaign about WikiLeaks. But the government prosecutors argued that call logs, email exchanges and other communications showed [otherwise.] During the late summer of 2016, for example, Stone had two calls with Trump himself and nearly 30 calls with the deputy campaign chairman, Rick Gates.

Stone was also in touch with Erik Prince, an informal Trump campaign adviser, in October 2016. They discussed the WikiLeaks document dumps, according to the documents.

…“You opened yourself up to six counts of perjury,” Credico wrote, more than a year before Stone was indicted on seven felony charges, including five for making false statements to Congress. “You should go back and amend your testimony and tell the truth….I’m sure you still have time.”

Democrats unveil three questions to guide public impeachment hearings

Did the President request that a foreign leader and government initiate investigations to benefit the President’s personal political interests in the United States, including an investigation related to the President’s political rival and potential opponent in the 2020 U.S. presidential election?

• Did the President – directly or through agents – seek to use the power of the Office of the President and other instruments of the federal government in other ways to apply pressure on the head of state and government of Ukraine to advance the President’s personal political interests, including by leveraging an Oval Office meeting desired by the President of Ukraine or by withholding U.S. military assistance to Ukraine?

• Did the President and his Administration seek to obstruct, suppress or cover up information to conceal from the Congress and the American people evidence about the President’s actions and conduct?

ProPublica obtains Trump tax records that could signal financial fraud – Business Insider

Newly uncovered tax documents from …Donald Trump contain several discrepancies that real-estate experts said could point to financial fraud.

…Tax records for 40 Wall Street and the Trump International Hotel and Tower reportedly contained discrepancies that could raise some red flags — specifically, the numbers made the properties look more valuable to lenders and less valuable to tax authorities.

…Trump told a lender that he got twice as much rent from one building as he reported to tax authorities that year.

…Trump used a series of dubious tax schemes to shield a $400 million inheritance from the IRS.

…[apparently he] fabricated a loan to avoid paying $50 million in income taxes.

Standing between Jeff Sessions and the Senate is a certain Donald Trump

Most of Sessions’ former colleagues are remaining on the sidelines of the crowded primary, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee will remain neutral.

…Sessions said he did not regret recusing himself from the Russia investigation — a decision Trump remains furious over. But he did push back on the impeachment inquiry Trump faces in the House, saying that the president has faced a “continuous political attack” but that Trump “conducted himself in this matter within the law” in his dealings with Ukraine.

…The other candidates have already signaled a willingness to attack Sessions directly. Tuberville put out a video shortly ahead of Sessions’ announcement showing news clips of Trump criticizing his former attorney general.

…Jones brushed off any concerns about Sessions entering the race, saying of the GOP primary: “They’re the ones that are running around with their hair on fire. It doesn’t affect anything that we’re doing.”

George Kent Impeachment Transcript: Ukraine Affair Undermined ‘Rule Of Law’

A top State Department aide questioned the legality of a U.S. president asking for an investigation into a political rival in his hours-long, closed-door deposition before congressional impeachment investigators.

“Politically related prosecutions are not the way of promoting the rule of law. They undermine the rule of law,” said George Kent, deputy assistant secretary in the State Department’s Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs.

…The policy, as Kent described it, pitted the traditional bipartisan foreign policy consensus over U.S. relations with Ukraine, a fledgling post-Soviet state that needs Western support, against a parallel policy being advocated by Rudy Giuliani, the president’s personal lawyer.

…Mulvaney dismissed the concerns of many of those testifying in the impeachment inquiry as “career bureaucrats” who “don’t like President Trump’s politics.”

There’s no evidence for that, however. Taylor, …for example, was hand-picked by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo after Marie Yovanovitch was recalled from the post. Taylor served as Ukraine ambassador previously under Republican President George W. Bush.

…Taylor testified that he saw conflicting U.S. policies toward Ukraine being enacted at the same time. The “regular channel,” as he called it, was trying to support Ukraine in its fight with Russia by promising military funding.

But the “irregular channel,” led by Giuliani, was threatening to withhold funding and a meeting with Trump unless investigations into conspiracy theories that could help the president’s reelection in 2020 were carried out.

…”One might say national interest versus partisan interest,” Kent said.

There has been zero evidence of wrongdoing by either Joe or Hunter Biden.

…Williams, a career foreign service officer assigned to Pence, was on the July 25 call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy that helped spark the impeachment inquiry.

Trump, on that call, asked Zelenskiy to “do us a favor” and investigate the two conspiracy theories.

State department official George Kent accuses Giuliani of ‘lies and deceit’

She said was told by an official in Ukraine that Mr Giuliani, and Yuriy Lutsenko, who at the time was Ukraine’s prosecutor general, were planning to “do things, including to me”.

In his deposition, Mr Kent said the campaign Mr Giuliani carried out against his fellow diplomat was based on untruths.

“Mr Giuliani, at that point, had been carrying on a campaign for several months full of lies and incorrect information about ambassador Yovanovitch, so this was a continuation of his campaign of lies,” he said.

Trump apparently wanted Ukraine to investigate Hillary Clinton in addition to the Bidens: State Department official

He just can’t get over Hillary Clinton.

Before giving U.S. military aid to Ukraine, …Trump wanted “nothing less” than for the European country to announce an investigation targeting Clinton in addition to one targeting Joe Biden and his son, according to a senior State Department official.

…Trump used Clinton’s name as “shorthand” for the investigation he wanted President Volodymyr Zelensky to launch into a debunked right-wing conspiracy theory claiming anti-Trump Ukrainians interfered in the 2016 election.

…Trump’s requested Biden investigation centered on unsubstantiated claims that the former vice president’s son, Hunter, evaded prosecution on corruption charges in the country with the help of his powerful father. There’s no evidence to back up the allegation.

…Sondland, a Trump campaign mega-donor, submitted revised testimony to impeachment investigators earlier this week confirming there was quid pro quo involved in the U.S. aid freeze, saying Zelensky had [to] agreed to make the CNN announcement in exchange for the sorely-needed defense cash.

Kent said he and other career officials were instructed to “keep” their heads “down,” as Giuliani and Trump-appointed administration officials engaged in the dubious back-channel efforts.

Part of that shadow policy included aggressive attempts by Giuliani to slander former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch and push for her ouster, according to Kent.

Hillary Clinton on Medicare for All: ‘The Goal Is the Right Goal,’ but It Won’t Pass

Clinton was most blunt about [Senator] Warren’s proposal to replace private health insurance with a single-payer system funded largely by taxes on the wealthy and corporations. Asked if she thought that proposal could get passed into law, Mrs. Clinton answered in the negative.

“No, I don’t — I don’t,” she said. “But the goal is the right goal.”

…[Clinton suggested] that “the smarter approach is to build on what we have” by adding the option of a public health care plan to the offerings of the Affordable Care Act.

…[She] sounded a note of skepticism about the detail-rich policy debates that have helped shape the Democratic primary so far. Those disputes during primary season, she said, do not always translate into actual governance after the election.

Her 2008 primary battle with Barack Obama furnished an instructive case study, Mrs. Clinton said: During that campaign, Mr. Obama fiercely opposed her proposal for a government mandate that all individuals purchase health insurance, but he went on to include that very rule as president.

The clash over health care unfolding in the primary now, she said, represented “a very healthy debate.”

Bloomberg makes preparations for 2020 run

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is preparing to file paperwork to qualify for the Democratic presidential primary in Alabama, ahead of a Friday deadline. The move would be a first step toward a national campaign, though Bloomberg has not made a final decision to run.

…Bloomberg has engaged in a will-he-or-won’t-he routine for over a decade about running for president, but declined to jump in each time. Earlier this year he was exploring a bid, only to bow out after former Vice President Joe Biden made clear he would run.

Gordon Sondland Testifies There Was Quid Pro Quo With Ukraine

“I said that resumption of the U.S. aid would likely not occur until Ukraine provided the public anticorruption statement that we had been discussing for many weeks,” Sondland says in his new testimony, referring to a conversation he had with Andriy Yermak, a top adviser to Zelensky.

…Sondland later testified that his insistence to Taylor that no quid pro quo was in place came after a phone call with Trump, who relayed to the “no quid pro quo” messaging. It’s now clear he was only relaying the president’s messaging, not his own belief.

Judge orders Trump to pay $2 million for misusing his foundation

President Donald Trump must pay a $2 million judgment for improperly using his Trump Foundation charity to further his 2016 presidential campaign, a New York state judge ruled Thursday.

…In her seven-page ruling, New York Supreme Court Justice Salliann Scarpulla wrote, “Mr. Trump’s fiduciary duty breaches included allowing his campaign to orchestrate the Fundraiser, allowing his campaign, instead of the Foundation, to direct distribution of the Funds, and using the Fundraiser and distribution of the Funds to further Mr. Trump’s political campaign.”

…The event wound up raising $2.8 million, according to the judge, some of which Trump distributed in the form of giant checks at campaign rallies before the Iowa caucuses.

Pelosi cautions 2020 Dems over liberal proposals: “Remember November. You must win the Electoral College”

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) issued a stern warning to the 2020 Democratic primary field that progressive policies that might fire up the party’s liberal wing could prove damaging in the general election.

Pelosi said proposals such as “Medicare for All” and a wealth tax that have been touted by Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) could appeal to progressive pockets but fail to land in key swing states.

“What works in San Francisco does not necessarily work in Michigan,” Pelosi said in an interview with Bloomberg News published Saturday. “What works in Michigan works in San Francisco — talking about workers’ rights and sharing prosperity.”

“Remember November,” she added. “You must win the Electoral College.”

Smartphone and speaker voice assistants can be hacked using lasers

these devices will also accept “signal injection” commands sent to them using pulses of laser light over distances of a hundred metres or more.

Hitherto, hacking such systems has been about sending them audible commands without their owner’s knowledge. Now the research confirms that it’s possible to achieve the same result over considerable distances in ways that might allow attackers to unlock “smartlock-protected front doors, open garage doors, shop on e-commerce websites at the target’s expense, or even locate, unlock and start various vehicles” that are connected to the victim’s Google account.

…Currently, the stock microphones that receive voice commands perform no authentication beyond checking wake phrases such as “OK Google” are in the owner’s voice and even this can be spoofed using voice synthesis.

The authentication problem could be mitigated in different ways – for example, by requiring that more than one microphone detect the same command simultaneously, something a laser attack would find difficult to overcome.

Trump Allies Want Joe Biden and Hunter Biden to Testify. Democrats Warn It Would Blow Up the Senate.
