San Francisco Becomes First City To Ban The Sale Of Plastic Bottles

Enough plastic is discarded every year to circle the globe four times. …50% of the plastic on this planet is used only once before being thrown away.

…Over the next four years, the ban will phase out the sales of plastic water bottles that hold 21 ounces or less in public spaces. A waiver is permissible if an adequate alternative water source is not available, reports GlobalFlare.

Effort to unlock secrets of 3,700-year-old woman ‘Ava’ – BBC News

…She was buried in a pit dug into solid rock and her skull is an abnormal shape which some suggest was done deliberately using bindings.

Maya Hoole believes advances in technology could reveal more about the remains known as “Ava”.

“…My interpretation suggests that the layout of the burial fits into a much wider trend extending as far south as North Yorkshire, and possibly much further beyond.”

Short and round skull shapes were common amongst this group, but Ms Hoole said the Achavanich specimen is exaggerated and of an abnormal, uneven shape.

The archaeologist said: “There has been much debate amongst the archaeological community for many decades about the shape. Some argue it is a hereditary trait, whilst others think there may have been a practice of head-binding which creates the distinct shape.

Dark Ages royal palace discovered in Cornwall – in area closely linked to the legend of King Arthur

The mysterious origins of the British archaeological site most often associated with the legend of King Arthur have just become even more mysterious. Archaeologists have discovered the impressive remains of a probable Dark Age royal palace at Tintagel in Cornwall. It is likely that the one-metre thick walls being unearthed are those of the main residence of the 6th century rulers of an ancient south-west British kingdom, known as Dumnonia.

Humpback whales around the globe are mysteriously rescuing animals from orcas

Scientists are baffled at this seemingly altruistic behavior, which seems to be a concerted global effort to foil killer whale hunts.

….concentrated effort? Not sure it sounds like all that but it definitely seems to be a pattern of behavior.

The writing is horrid and it is more sensationalized opinion-driven commentary than relating facts and such but still…

Neonicotinoid insecticides can serve as inadvertent insect contraceptives

…Here, we show that two neonicotinoids (4.5 ppb thiamethoxam and 1.5 ppb clothianidin) significantly reduce the reproductive capacity of male honeybees (drones), Apis mellifera . Drones were obtained from colonies exposed to the neonicotinoid insecticides or controls, and subsequently maintained in laboratory cages until they reached sexual maturity. …Our results demonstrate for the first time that neonicotinoid insecticides can negatively affect male insect reproductive capacity, and provide a possible mechanistic explanation for managed honeybee queen failure and wild insect pollinator decline. The widespread prophylactic use of neonicotinoids may have previously overlooked inadvertent contraceptive effects on non-target insects, thereby limiting conservation efforts.

New study suggests pesticides could lower IQ

UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health measured the IQs of 7-year-olds whose mothers in the agricultural Salinas Valley in California.

…For every 522 pounds of chemical pesticides applied less than 0.6 miles from where the pregnant mother lived, the child’s IQ declined by 2 points, and the child’s verbal reasoning score declined by 3 points.

…A study published in the journal Pediatrics in 2011 found a link between pesticides in food and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Researchers took urine samples 1,140 children and evaluated them for the symptoms of ADHD.

They found that the children who met the criteria for ADHD had significantly higher levels of a breakdown product of organophosphate pesticides in their urine.

Meet the Young Black Doctor Who Opened a Pharmacy in NC

Martez: I wanted the patients to get out of my pharmacy the same things they could get from a retail store like personal hygiene items, vitamin supplements, drinks, food, etc. I also wanted to be able to offer the wellness component too because I felt like this was something that would set my pharmacy apart. So with that, we do compounding which is when the medication isn’t available in a certain formulation, we customize it for the patient. Also genetic testing where we check the compatibility of patients with over 200 different medications and they could actually carry that test for the rest of their lives so if they’re ever diagnosed with something, we would already know what medications would work for that patient and what won’t work for them based on their genetic makeup. Also medication therapy management where I sit down with patients and do a complete workup of their medications and try to find things that may be prescribed by different doctors that can be decreased or that may be causing other complications that we can take off board to help that patient in the long run. So we focus on that wellness component and educating the patient to empower them to utilize their medication more effectively.
