Black Governors in Connecticut

[Black residents]  had their own, parallel governments in Connecticut for almost 100 years, beginning around the mid-18th century.

…The tradition began about 1750, when white Colonists believed it was a pragmatic way to handle the slaves and keep them in line. In later years, they also wanted to train African Americans to govern themselves and handle disputes.

Initially, the first black governors were either leaders of their African tribes or the slaves of wealthy officials. They were chosen in bona fide elections.

…Some black governors were chosen for having a master who was governor.

…Some of the black governors descended from African nobility.

…Some of the governors were elected by black people from throughout the state, and some were elected for their town or area.

…Eventually, the race for the black governor’s job became elaborate, with an election held a week after the white election in the spring. Qualifications to vote for blacks included owning a pig and a sty. Black women were banned from voting, as white women were from the white men’s elections.

After the vote by hand or by acclamation, the black governor came out often dressed with a military uniform and with a sword, riding a horse in a long parade that included his government. His master paid for the celebration.

…There were other black officials in New England — including five governors in Rhode Island and black kings in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. But, Connecticut had the most and longest run of black governors.

…In Connecticut, the black governor shared responsibility with a lieutenant governor, magistrates and justices of the peace and sheriffs who helped administer and enforce the law.

Accused Tearfully Addresses Judge Before She’s Sentenced: ‘I’m Forever Sorry’

The 20-year-old Ohio woman rarely showed any emotion as she was tried on allegations she murdered and buried her newborn baby. She had wiped away tears when her daughter’s remains were shown to the jury, and she had smiled briefly while her brother testified about their close bond.

Other than that, she sat stoically in court for the 10-day trial.

But everything changed on Thursday, when she was found not guilty of aggravated murder, involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment. She was found guilty of only one charge: gross abuse of a corpse. As the verdict was read, Richardson wept.

Sacklers Accused Of Shielding One Billion Dollars As Hedge Against Litigation

The filing comes after nearly two dozen states and 2,300 local governments reached a tentative settlement with Purdue Pharma to resolve thousands of lawsuits alleging that the company helped fuel the opioid crisis. New York and others states rejected the settlement.

…The court filing highlights the activities of Mortimer D.A. Sackler, a former Purdue board member. It alleges that Sackler transferred millions of dollars from trust companies, at least one of which was previously unknown, through Swiss bank accounts to himself as early as 2009. Some of the funds were directed to real estate companies that owned Sackler family homes in Manhattan and the Hamptons, the filings said.

…The New York attorney general’s office believes there is much more to be learned about the family’s holdings and that information is central to arriving at a just settlement. Prosecutors want the court to enforce subpoenas of companies, banks and advisers tied to Purdue and the Sacklers.

Forbes estimates the Sackler family fortune at $13 billion, making the Sacklers the 19th wealthiest family in the nation.

Woman Who Ran For US President In 1872 Was Compared To Satan, Locked Up

“Victoria did have a messianic aspect in all she did, which led her to believe she could make a major statement – that women should have the right to run for office, as well as get the vote – even if not in her lifetime,” said Myra MacPherson, author of the Woodhull biography “The Scarlet Sisters: Sex, Suffrage, and Scandal in the Gilded Age.”

Woodhull was a contemporary of famed suffragists Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, but “she was a feminist, not a suffragist,” MacPherson explained. The distinction was significant. While Anthony and Stanton primarily sought the right to vote, Woodhull espoused sexual, societal and economic liberation, concepts controversial to many suffragists.

She advocated for “free love,” a Victorian-era concept that espoused sexual and societal liberation for women and, most controversially, that women should be allowed to have sex outside marriage. Woodhull saw the institution as nothing more than a trap that robbed women of their identity, and denied them ownership not only of property but their own bodies. At that time, when women married, they were completely subsumed by their husbands, with their rights to property and their children rendered moot. Long before “domestic violence” entered the public lexicon, Woodhull was speaking before crowds about the evils of rape within marriage.

…And then, in November 1872, Woodhull and Claflin published a salacious accusation that a famous Protestant minister, the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher, was having an affair. (For more context on Beecher’s standing: His sister was abolitionist Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.”) Beecher had preached against “free love,” and Woodhull saw the affair as an example of a double standard for men.

The article ran afoul of the era’s obscenity laws and spelled doom for her political career.

“The whole thing just explodes, it becomes this national sensation,” Lemay said. “Victoria Woodhull gets arrested for spreading pornography, and put into jail for a couple months.”

Imprisoned, Woodhull could not campaign, and never actually did as a presidential candidate.

Who won the Democratic debate? Here are the winners and losers

*Julián Castro: The former San Antonio mayor had a clear plan going into this debate: Go after Biden and paint himself as the true heir to the Obama legacy. Unfortunately for Castro, he went way too hard at Biden on the age issue with his “are you forgetting” line — that he repeated four times. The attack wound up making Biden look sympathetic — and the former vice president’s response, measured and in control, made Castro look small.

You fucktard!!!!

What the ever living fuck is wrong with your ass, Beto?

You don’t think you’ll make it to the General so you want to tank all of the other Dems chances too?

Fucking ignorant, short-sighted, dipshit.

It’s not a bout being right, you ass! It’s about appealing enough to win. Then you can be right about anything you want. Until then? No more handing the opposition  the middle gift-wrapped and on a silver platter.

Sit down and shut the fuck up before you, Cory Booker, or any of you other clearly-don’t-have-what-it-takes idiots ruin it for the entire country.

Fucking dipshit.

Sawdust Might Be One Answer to the World’s Plastic Problem – Bloomberg

Origin Materials is getting ready to pay sawmills in the area $20 a ton for the scraps left over in the process of turning logs into lumber, which it will use to make recyclable plastic bottles that remove carbon-dioxide from the sky because they’re made from sustainably sourced wood waste.

…Other so-called bio-based plastics are being developed from sugar, corn, algae, seaweed, sewage and even dead beetles.

…However ingenious the techniques to make plant-based bottles may get, though, they’re still plastic. Not all varieties are recyclable or biodegradable. And ultimately unless they are recycled — and worldwide only one out of every five bottles is — plastic bottles inevitably end up in landfills where they may spew pollutants into the air, or worse, find their way into the oceans where most could take hundreds of years to degrade, killing birds, fish and whales in the process. When incinerating, bio-based plastics may be little better than oil-based ones because the carbon stored in them is released.

…Phasing out petroleum-based plastics will be an uphill battle. Use of the material has become so ingrained for societies around the world that about half of all new oil demand through 2040 will come from petrochemicals, an industry that relies on plastics for most of its business, according to BloombergNEF. The $500 billion global plastics market is responsible for 5% of greenhouse gas emissions.

…Nestle alone produces 1.7 million tons of plastic packaging a year. …Beverage makers like Coca-Cola Co. and Pepsi use a lot more than that. Coca-Cola rolled out its so-called plantbottle in 2009, but it’s still 70% petroleum based.

In the mafia, there is a name for what Pence and Barr did

The mafia uses a practice known as “kicking up” or “paying tribute” to the boss. Essentially, all members of a mafia family must make sure that some of their earnings end up in the boss’ pocket. From the member’s point of view, “kicking up” is a way to show respect, curry favor, and reinforce the hierarchical power structure. From the boss’s point of view, it’s a way to get rich.

…Apologists can nibble at the margins, but there is no escaping that Barr’s choice to patronize a Trump property, like Pence’s, will put thousands of dollars in Trump’s pocket.

…This trend of high-ranking federal officials choosing to pay thousands of dollars to use Trump’s private properties is problematic on two levels. First, the payments could violate the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution, which prohibits federal government officials from accepting (1) “any present, emoluments, title or office” from any foreign country or (2) any income beyond official salary from any American state or the federal government. There already is pending litigation under the Emoluments Clause over Trump’s receipt of revenue from foreign leaders who have stayed at Trump properties. Trump’s receipt of income directly from the federal government to cover Pence’s stay at the hotel presents another potential violation of the Emoluments Clause.

…Second, the decisions by Pence and Barr to patronize Trump’s private business raise vexing precedent and serious ethical questions. Do other high-ranking federal officials need to take notice and follow suit? Will they be punished or disfavored if they don’t throw a couple bucks Trump’s way? Is there some implicit understanding that Trump will favor those who pay? Even if the answer to all of these questions is “no,” the appearance itself is terrible; the American public rightly will wonder if ethical lines have been blurred, and that in itself is problematic.

Chicago mayor to Ted Cruz over city shootings: ‘Keep our name out of your mouth’

Lightfoot, a Democrat, claimed in a tweet that 60% of illegal firearms recovered in Chicago come from outside of Illinois, “mostly from states dominated by coward Republicans like you who refuse to enact commonsense gun legislation.”

“Keep our name out of your mouth,” Lightfoot wrote in a message directed at the Republican senator.

British Woman Filmed Biting Chicken Seller’s Hand While Trying To Free Bird

If she wanted to free the chicken, why she didn’t buy it herself and let it go afterwards[?] While others were simply astounded at the woman’s ‘sense of entitlement’ and ‘superiority complex.’

…Others have called her [behavior] ‘voluntourism’, where those privileged enough to be able to travel the world do so while trying to ‘influence’ and ‘educate’ cultures they do not fully understand.

British Woman Filmed Biting Chicken Seller’s Hand While Trying To Free Bird

Becky, Becky, Becky….

You’re not helping, you’re on holiday – the problem with ‘voluntourism’

The global poor don’t need entitled, middle-class (almost half of private school pupils take gap years, compared to 1 in 5 overall), Westerners coming over to lay a few bricks and pose for a few photos. If you genuinely want to help, donate some money and let the experts and locals do their jobs. Otherwise, keep schtum.

Volun-tourism isn’t just irritating, it can also be harmful. Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) has described charity tourism as a new form of colonialism. Judith Brodie, who was once UK director, suggested students travelling to developing countries can in fact end up doing more harm than good. In particular, she has criticised the emphasis on volunteer enjoyment over how to help the communities they work in.

…Popping in to teach baffled children English, or to harvest a couple of plants, is inefficient, ineffective, and won’t help impoverished communities around the world to prosper. What these communities want and deserve are the tools, resources, and opportunities to learn and to do that work themselves. They require financial support, not unskilled volunteer labour.

Video: British Tourist Violently Berates, Bites Vendor Over Caged Chickens in Tangier

The onlookers tell the woman she is crazy, and others tells the chicken vendor to call the police. As the woman gets increasingly hysterical, another onlooker advises the vendor to carry the chickens away in order to pacify her.

…The tourist can be seen directing her anger towards an elderly woman before the footage goes shakey and the video cuts off.

A police source told lesiteinfo.com that the tourist was taken to hospital in a hysterical condition, after locals informed the tourist police of the incident.

While some internet users make fun of the tourist, others point out the more worrying dynamic and draw attention to the fact that, while she believes she is promoting animal rights and informing an ‘ignorant’ population, she is displaying an arrogant, neo-colonial attitude, expecting to influence change in a culture she does not fully understand.

…“I pity this poor salesman who was just trying to make a living, only to be subjected to awful name-calling and gestures! And coming from a supposedly civilized country as well,” said another.

“Does she think that in her countries chickens live in villas or something?” another chimed in.

…In an ever more global society, where the privileged classes are able to travel at will, the global south is experiencing a resurgence of colonial powers at an individual level.

Now it is not only the governments, explicitly controlling political and financial dynamics, but the individuals who, as a result of their own privilege, see themselves as superior to the inhabitants of the countries they visit.

‘You can’t f****** read’: Video of British tourist shouting at Moroccan man for keeping chickens in cage sparks outrage

Some have called her a young woman making a courageous – if somewhat violent – lone stand in a defiant bid to save a single chicken from probable slaughter.

Others have pointed out she is a white British person harassing, insulting and eventually swinging punches at bemused Moroccan traders in their own country.

Police who attended, meanwhile, have said the unidentified female was suffering hysteria.
