Babies have no choice: Violence spills into young minds

President Barack Obama wants schools to have more mental health professionals and resource officers in order to better prevent violence. He also wants to provide training to teachers to recognize when young people need help and know how to refer those students to the right mental health services.

The Real Reason College Tuition Costs So Much

A major factor driving increasing costs is the constant expansion of university administration. According to the Department of Education data, administrative positions at colleges and universities grew by 60 percent between 1993 and 2009, which Bloomberg reported was 10 times the rate of growth of tenured faculty positions.

Even more strikingly, an analysis by a professor at California Polytechnic University, Pomona, found that, while the total number of full-time faculty members in the C.S.U. system grew from 11,614 to 12,019 between 1975 and 2008, the total number of administrators grew from 3,800 to 12,183 — a 221 percent increase.

A Brooklyn School’s Curriculum Includes Ambition

Ahhh… A HONY inspired break from the bad news.

I think it is patently unfair and -in the short, medium, and long run- totally inefficient to judge schools, students, and teachers with a set of one-size-fits-all numbers. Students are not one size fits all. Many triumphs and tragedies are hidden in averages and means. That said…

Given the starting point for most of these students, this school’s numbers are incredibly impressive.

Sigh… The student make valid points.

Covering up the facts of our history o avoid making people uncomfortable makes me uncomfortable. If our country’s mistakes are  better known and understood, we can better avoid repeating them.

Hmmmm…..

We should ban religious indoctrination in all public schools. No, seriously. We should. No more teaching from a religious bias! Teach the reality and science of climate change instead! Factual information on reproductive health and sex for young people. No more diverting women away from STEM classes because it won’t fit their “future role.” Textbooks and lessons that are 100% honest about our country’s treatment of native peoples and African-Americans before and after slavery. Equal access to information for all!

Taking religion out of it sounds pretty good. I’m guessing that that is not what the good rep has in mind though.
