Time Out defends Meryl Streep T-shirt in ‘slave’ row

LONDON (AP) — Time Out magazine has defended its use of a slogan including the word slave on a T-shirt worn by Meryl Streep to promote the movie “Suffragette,” arguing that critics have taken the quote out of context.

Without getting into whether or not this was a poor or thoughtless choice of words….

Women tearing down women talking about women empowering each other. What the hell is wrong with this picture?!

Could a lot of the accusing, name-calling, “outing,” and just generally being holier than thou and judge-y that comes out of the left could be avoided by better education?

Or just empathy for each other even?

Would progressive have whined less if they knew the history of the phrasing?

Would Americans be less reactionary and authoritarian if they had more of a global perspective?

Will the left ever stop picking off and hostilely separating itself from its allies with its litmus tests?

Does it all just come down to liberals being incapable of assuming good intent?

sigh…..

Dark-skinned Playmobil pirate-ship doll wearing ‘slave collar’ ignites outrage

“If you look at the box, you can see that the pirate figure is clearly a crew member on the pirate ship and not a captive,” according to the statement. “The figure was meant to represent a pirate who was a former slave in a historical context. It was not our intention to offend anyone in anyway.”

I fucking hate shit like this. Loud whining and crying while totally missing the context. Just because you take something wrong and fly off the handle doesn’t mean it is offensive or derogatory. Sometimes, just sometimes, nobodies hating but the ones doing the bitching about the hating.

There was a significant number of pirates who had escaped the bonds of slavery and signed on with a pirate ship. It’s part of our society’s actual history. It represent emancipation for the crew members involved and most certainly an advancement of his individual condition to one where he was participating in socially stratified but still somewhat democratic culture on-board ship. That’s a good thing. It’s a good thing to remember that taking up piracy was one of the ways slaves did escape back in those troubled times.

Calling this nod to one of the few safe havens for former slaves racist is so fucking ignorant that even my whiteness can’t stop me from calling bullshit on these reactionaries. Usually I defer to the wisdom of listening instead of speaking in matters of race -and I can’t truly blame any individual American for the piss poor quality of their education- but seriously, this stuff is some seriously reactionary, ignorant, bullshit.

Context, people! Context!!!

The Caucasian’s Guide To Black Churches

Eleven a.m. Sunday morning was once called “the most segregated hour in America,” but as the nation becomes more diverse, so do its institutions of worship. Steeped in traditions passed down since slavery, churches are one of the cornerstones of the African-American community, and navigating the subtleties of these Black houses of praise can be challenging. Luckily, we have assembled here a comprehensive guide that will help those of Caucasian descent when visiting this unfamiliar territory.

Kim Davis outright lied in her account of ‘meeting’ with Pope Francis

It’s now becoming apparent that infamous Kentucky clerk Kim Davis’s account of her meeting with the Pontiff was most likely bullsh*t.

Kim Davis outright lied in her account of ‘meeting’ with Pope Francis

Nice to see the liberal reaction-gencia come around.

It was weird being the non-Catholic that I am and thinking to myself, as I read diatribes raking the Pope over the coals for immorality, “Hey now. Go easy on the Pontiff. He seems like a decent sort.”

Counter-protesters join kimono fray at MFA – The Boston Globe

A playful attempt by the Museum of Fine Arts to engage summer visitors has triggered a controversy that is mushrooming beyond expectations, with protesters taking to the museum’s “Kimono Wednesdays” event in increasing force each week, and a group of kimono-wearing counterprotesters joining the fray.

God I hate people. Seriously, people seriously suck. Ass.

Oh and people need a hobby and a fucking life if that is what is at the top of their drowning-in-myopic-self-importance-and-blindly-privileged-faux-outrage list of priorities. Seriously, can’t you find any bigger villains than a fucking museum you assholes?

Psssst, I’m betting it wasn’t the people you are attacking that raped you. Get a fucking sense of perspective losers. Why do you have take an important issue and make it so, so unsympathetic? I mean seriously…. The wrong you are doing the museum is only eclipsed by the disservice you do to yourself and the issues you hold dear.

Earth to over privileged assholes, showing an interest is not the same as being disrespectful. Besides you miss the whole fucking point of Camille’s painting. …Because you are a bunch of myopic self-absorbed losers. Losers.

NASA Is ‘Muslim Outreach’

Earlier this week, wheezing reddened pile of bagpipes Rush Limbaugh objected to the news that there’s liquid water on Mars—it’s more like a “sneaky leftist agenda” on Mars to get people to care about climate change, he argued, for some reason. On Tuesday, he went ahead and brought Muslims into it, too. Why not.

Pope Francis and Kim Davis

I wondered if coverage like this was a tad reactionary:

After first refusing to confirm or deny it, the Vatican has confirmed that Pope Francis met with the Kentucky clerk Kim Davis at the Vatican Embassy in Washington, where Davis’s attorney — who made the news public after the pope’s trip ended — said Francis told her to “stay strong.” We don’t yet know all the details of how the meeting came to pass, but the optics of it are bad no matter what. This simple encounter completely undermines all the goodwill the pope created in downplaying “the gay issue” on his U.S. trip. The pope played us for fools, trying to have it both ways. He’s an artful politician, telling different audiences what they want to hear on homosexuality.

Seems it was.

“Pope Francis met with several dozen persons who had been invited by the Nunciature to greet him as he prepared to leave Washington for New York City. Such brief greetings occur on all papal visits and are due to the Pope’s characteristic kindness and availability. The only real audience granted by the Pope at the Nunciature was with one of his former students and his family.”

…The meeting “should not be considered a form of support of her position in all of its particular and complex aspects,” said a press statement from the Vatican
