Gitmo Judge Convicts U.S. General—Because He Stood Up for Detainee Rights

Brigadier General John Baker protested the government’s surveillance of Guantanamo Bay defense lawyers. And that got him sentenced to 21 days in confinement.

…Baker is a senior officer within in the highly controversial military commissions process: the Chief of Defense Counsel.

“The military commissions are willing to put people in jail for defending the rule of law,” Jay Connell, who represents another Guantanamo detainee facing a military commission, told The Daily Beast.

…Earlier this month, three civilian attorneys for Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, the accused bomber of the USS Cole in 2000, abruptly quit the death-penalty case. The attorneys said that they had significant reason to believe the government was listening in to their communications. [They were] barred them from discussing the issue with Nashiri, since it was classified. [Which means,] Nashiri had lost his lawyers without ever knowing exactly why.

How Vets And Doctors Get Around The VA’s Medical Marijuana Policy

“While on federal property in a federal rehab program, [veterans] can be allowed to use a federally illegal substance,” Fruchter told Task & Purpose by phone. “On a patient-doctor level, if this is what you want, it’s doable.” Through a combination of persistence, vague regulations, and an open-minded medical team, Fruchter had stumbled upon an unusual loophole in the VA’s approach to medical marijuana — one that is putting individual VA clinics at odds with the department’s publicly stated policy.

For God’s sake people, stop calling the police and asking them to take care of your loved ones. They will kill them. Just stop.

Utah police officer fired after manhandling, arresting nurse who was doing her job

A Salt Lake City police detective was fired and his supervisor demoted Tuesday for their roles in the arrest of a nurse who was manhandled and shoved screaming into a squad car as she tried to protect the legal rights of an unconscious patient.

Detective Jeff Payne was fired and James Tracy, his watch commander, was demoted two ranks from lieutenant to officer after an internal review by the Salt Lake City Police Department found their actions toward the nurse violated department policy and undermined public trust.

…Wubbels and her attorney Karra Porter say they went public with the footage of the arrest because they believed police were not taking the matter seriously enough. Porter told the Tribune on Tuesday that she was pleased that Payne had been fired, and said she had not formed an opinion about Tracy’s discipline.

“Chief Brown took significant steps, and seems to understand the importance of regaining public trust,” Porter wrote in a tweet. “But further discussions are needed.”

…Wubbels told reporters she was grateful her arrest was recorded.

“I think I owe it to the body camera footage,” she said. “Without that, my story never would have had the impact it has had.”

Although it seems obvious that the police Chief responded to the bad PR, rather than the bad behavior of his subordinates, any time a police officer faces negative consequences for abusing the public trust and the power of his or her badge it is a small step forward.

Rape victim’s attacker gets joint child custody

[Judge Gregory S.] Ross disclosed the rape victim’s address to [the rapist]and ordered [his] name to be added to the child’s birth certificate — all without the victim’s consent or a hearing, according to [Victim’s Attorney, Rebecca ] Kiessling.

“An assistant prosecutor on this, Eric Scott, told me she had granted her consent, which was a lie — she has never been asked to do this and certainly never signed anything,” Kiessling said.

…Kiessling said her client was notified she was “not allowed to move 100 miles from where she had been living when the case was filed, without court consent.”

Authorities confirm armed suspect Lowell Ambler, former sheriff’s deputy, taken into custody

LaSalle County authorities confirm that Lowell Ambler has been taken in to custody in Earlville, Ill. The suspect has been on the run since Sunday.

“We have charges in Lee County for home invasion and aggravated kidnapping,” Lee County Sheriff John Simonton said. “On those bond conditions, he was not supposed to have any contact with family members that were affiliated with this alleged crime. And he did.”

Last month, Ambler was arrested for allegedly holding a Lee County teenager against her will by duct-taping her hands and head. He was released on bond days later but police said he drove to Plainfield, where that victim and her family was staying.

Here’s how Nate Boyer got Colin Kaepernick to go from sitting to kneeling

Boyer wrote an open letter to Kaepernick earlier this season, and it caused the two to meet up and discuss America and honoring the anthem.

…”We sorta came to a middle ground where he would take a knee alongside his teammates,” Boyer says. “Soldiers take a knee in front of a fallen brother’s grave, you know, to show respect. When we’re on a patrol, you know, and we go into a security halt, we take a knee, and we pull security.”

…Boyer described him as “very receptive.”

“Very receptive. He said, ‘I think that would be– I think– I think that would be really powerful,'” Boyer recalls. “And, you know, he asked me to do it with him. And I said, ‘Look, I’ll stand next to you. I gotta stand though. I gotta stand with my hand on my heart. That’s just– that’s just what I do and where I’m from.'”

Sections from Nate Boyer’s open letter to Colin Kaepernick

“Unfortunately, I also know that racism still exists in our country, as it does in every other country on this planet, and I hate that I know that. I hate the third verse of our national anthem, but thankfully we don’t sing that verse anymore. I hate that at times I feel guilty for being white.

…I am in no way political, but I’m proud that we have an African-American president, and that I got to serve under him. Overcoming racism at home is a slow process, and we still have a long way to go, but most of us are trying. That’s what sets us apart from so many other places. In this country, no matter who you are, where you come from, what color you are, you can try.

…The only time I got to stand on the sideline for the anthem was during my one and only NFL preseason game, against the Denver Broncos. As I ran out of the tunnel with the American flag I could feel myself swelling with pride, and as I stood on the sideline with my hand on my heart as the anthem began, that swelling burst into tears.

…That moment meant so much more to me than even playing in the game did, and to be honest, if I had noticed my teammate sitting on the bench, it would have really hurt me.

…I’m not judging you for standing up for what you believe in. It’s your inalienable right. What you are doing takes a lot of courage, and I’d be lying if I said I knew what it was like to walk around in your shoes. I’ve never had to deal with prejudice because of the color of my skin, and for me to say I can relate to what you’ve gone through is as ignorant as someone who’s never been in a combat zone telling me they understand what it’s like to go to war.

Even though my initial reaction to your protest was one of anger, I’m trying to listen to what you’re saying and why you’re doing it. When I told my mom about this article, she cautioned me that “the last thing our country needed right now was more hate.” As usual, she’s right.

…I look forward to the day you’re inspired to once again stand during our national anthem. I’ll be standing right there next to you. Keep on trying … De Oppresso Liber.”

Police Criticize Trump for Urging Officers Not to Be ‘Too Nice’ With Suspects

President Trump’s admonition that the police should not be “too nice” while transporting suspects drew laughter and cheers from a crowd of officers on Friday, but police officials swiftly made it clear they did not find the words funny.

From New York to Los Angeles, law enforcement authorities criticized the president’s remarks. Experts worried that his words could encourage the inappropriate use of force. A defense lawyer even signaled that he might use video of the speech in court.

Chris Sommers Responds After Police Union Puts Him — and Pi Pizzeria — on Blast

Yes, I had to lock down my restaurant for the first time from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department. I then had to close the restaurant, buy dinner for remaining guests and ensure that my team, who were now all terrified from the gas and rush by the police, had a safe ride home. I repeat, we only closed our restaurant this weekend out of fear of police, not protestors or the shitheads vandalizing.

… Despite the SLMPD catching none of the criminals who have assaulted and robbed me, my businesses and employees, or home, I have continued to support them. They have NOT protected me and often never showed up when I’ve called them, but I’ve continue to serve them, with free meals and cash.

…The systematic racism and corruption in our SLMPD and beyond is well-known and documented. (What I’ve experienced the past few days, however, is trivial when compared to what African Americans do on a daily basis. I don’t at all mean to create a false equivalency with this. I know the gun they used on me could have been different if I were black.) I’ve had many cops and relatives of cops and former cops approach me since this incident to tell me of their own experiences with it, and why they had to leave the force because they could not ethically continue. A co-worker of mine was dining in St. Louis on Friday, when six cops came in bragging about killing Smith, saying “so what, we killed him, St. Louis needs to move on.”

…But it’s so much larger than that. Cops can do no wrong in their minds, and they will defend each other to no end. The authoritarian code in the police departments transcends their work, influences their politics and informs their “faith.” It’s disgusting….

Although the truck incident is unfair it is far from the most egregious example of asset seizure gone wrong. Apparently the truly outrageous thing here is that this dude is a white republican???

Oklahoma City Police Fatally Shoot Deaf Man Despite Yells Of ‘He Can’t Hear’

Police in Oklahoma City on Tuesday night fatally shot a deaf man who they say was advancing toward them with a metal pipe as witnesses yelled that the man was deaf and could not hear them.

Lt. Matthew Lindsey arrived at the address and encountered 35-year-old Magdiel Sanchez, who was on the porch holding a 2-foot metal pipe with a leather loop in his right hand. Lindsey called for backup and Sgt. Christopher Barnes arrived.

….”In those situations, very volatile situations, when you have a weapon out, you can get what they call tunnel vision or you can really lock into just the person that has the weapon that’d be the threat against you,” [said the person who doesn’t understand it is the cops jobs to protect, not kill in cold blood, even if their pansy asses are scared.]

….Police ordered Sanchez to drop the weapon and get on the ground, Mathews said. Both officers had weapons drawn — Lindsey had a Taser and Barnes a gun. Sanchez came off the porch and was walking toward Barnes.

Oklahoma City Police Fatally Shoot Deaf Man Despite Yells Of ‘He Can’t Hear’ : The Two-Way : NPR

…And instead of listening to bystanders or (more importantly) using the taser they already had drawn they killed him in cold blood.

Screw the tunnel vision bullshit. If a person can’t fight their instincts enough to overcome that, they have no business carrying a gun , let alone a badge.

These officers should be in prison. They committed cold blooded murder. Anyone who attempts to justify their action is aiding and abetting them and should be tossed into a dark and depressing prison right along with them.
