President of Locarno Film Festival defends burka ban

In Switzerland, people show their face and shake hands, Solari said in an interview on Tuesday with newspaper Blick. “Whoever comes here should abide by our rules” he added.

The case of two teenage Muslim brothers at a school in Therwil who refused to shake the hand of their teacher before and after class – a common practice in Swiss schools – generated headlines around the world at the beginning of April.

…The legislation does not specifically mention burkas or Muslims, but states that “nobody in public streets or squares may veil or hide their face”. It doesn’t apply to headscarves.

Muslim face veil ban for workers is not discriminatory, Austrian court rules

The court said although the comments were discriminatory, firing her for wearing the veil was not, because the clothing was likely to prevent her communicating with others.

An Indiana Family Dollar manager asked a woman to leave the store for wearing a traditional Islamic veil known as a niqab.

Sigh…

Honestly, I think women who need to cover their entire face should just stay at home instead. The whole idea of a Niqab (and I’m only referring to the fact that it covers the entire face here, removing all individuality from the visage of the woman in question) is a huge slap in the face to those who fought for the advancement and equality of women in our – or any- society. It’s also rather insulting to men because it seems to imply that all men are toddlers who cannot control their impulses. The practice is an abomination.  (Not to mention disrespectful to the first wife of the prophet.)

But! I’m not trying to say women CAN’T go out like that, I’m just saying that I find it disgusting, immoral, and beyond inconsiderate of others.

That said… It’s a shame this woman was thrown out of the store.

I would hope that anyone in the clerk’s position would behave better than this person did to a woman who entered their establishment. Disapprove of other’s choices all you want but still treat people with respect!

Watch This CNN Panel Try to Hold It Together When Someone Says Voting For Hillary Is Sexist

Right-wing pundit Scottie Nell Hughes appeared on CNN this morning to opine that if someone votes for Hillary Clinton merely because she’s a woman, that is vile sexism. “Why sit there and put favor on one [group]?” Hughes wondered. Now look at what fellow panelists Sally Kohn and Michaela Angela Davis did while she was talking. Look at the actual pain on their faces.

Men in Iran are wearing hijabs in a display of solidarity with women across the country who are forced to cover their heads in public.  Wearing a headscarf is strictly enforced by so-called ‘morality police’ in Iran and has been since the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

She voiced her state’s votes for Clinton and her excitement just shined.

What a wild, crazy, wonderful thing to be born before your own right to vote and then to help nominate a woman for President in one of the major political parties.

I mean, just, wow.

I have a sheepish middle-class white person confession to make.

…Before I get into it, I want to make clear that in no way am I dissing, rejecting, or eschewing people of my own ethnic and cultural make-up. Quite the opposite in fact. Of course I’m way comfortable among folks who look like me. I’m a W.A.S.P.y-ass preppy-redneck and it’s hard to get much more Caucasian than that. The snow-white vanilla mayonnaise runs strong in my blood!

That said….

I don’t know if it is my background, where I’ve lived, or what, but I’m always more comfortable when there is a healthy mix of people from different backgrounds in any given group. Makes it more homey or something.

Plus, different people bring different strengths to the table, and that just makes the entire group stronger.

Anyways…

Go, ladies!

….The acquittal came from a Bexar County Texas court which determined that Mr Gilbert, who was facing a life sentence, should not be convicted of murder “because he was trying to retrieve stolen property.”
