Nixon Policy Advisor Admits He Invented War On Drugs to Suppress ‘Anti-War Left and Black People’

Dan Baum, writing in support of drug legalization at Harper’s, has unleashed a frank 1994 quote from former Nixon policy advisor John Ehrlichman, and as inadvertently salient an argument for legalizing drugs as any I’ve ever seen:

Sigh….

A suspension is good. Being fired immediately would have been more appropriate though. Don’t do your job? Get fired, face charges for wasting tax-payer resources and lose your pension. Simple. No other job on the planet would continue to pay you when you are not performing your duties.

An officer who takes tax-payer money in the form of his or her uniform, gun, badge, car, and paycheck and then does live up to their end of the deal has committed fraud and should be prosecuted for it.

UN human rights chief: FBI risks ‘unlocking a Pandora’s Box’ if Apple is forced to unlock iPhone

The U.N. joined Facebook, Google and many other tech firms in backing Apple in the fight with the FBI.

The top human rights authority at the United Nations warned Friday that if the FBI succeeds in forcing Apple to unlock an iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino attackers, it could have “tremendous ramifications” around the world and “potentially [be] a gift to authoritarian regimes, as well as to criminal hackers.”

Crowd Pelts Cops With Rocks and Debris After Shooting of Teen in Salt Lake City

A small riot erupted in Salt Lake City after police shot a teenage boy near a homeless shelter on Saturday night.

The shooting occurred at around 8pm in the northern part of the city, near a shopping mall about five miles east of the airport. Witness Selam Mohammed, 19, told local news outlets that his friend was trying to break up a fight outside the Road Home, a homeless shelter, when police arrived on the scene.

We need to stop tolerating cops who kill at will. They are not justified. It is not understandable. It is murder pure and simple. Betraying the public’s trust need to be severely punished, every single fucking time. There is no excuse for giving racist thugs special privileges. Shoot an unarmed person? Lose your badge and pension. Every single time. If it turns out a cop shoots someone when they were not in danger then it needs to be lengthy jail sentences. Every single time. The police involved need to be tried, convicted of murder, and jailed for 1st degree murder.

Bernie Sanders voted for the 1994 tough-on-crime law. But it’s complicated. – Vox

Sanders’s vote seems to be an outlier in an otherwise softer-on-crime record. But Hillary Clinton’s support was genuinely about being tough on crime.

Revisionary, apologist, nonsense. Either he voted for it or he didn’t.
If she gets a black on her record for supporting it, then he certainly gets one for voting for it. Without the votes in Congress it never would have passed and all of the spin in the world doesn’t change that fact.

But that can’t be right — recording in public is protected because of what you could say later using the recording, not because of what you’re saying while you’re recording.

‘Black Lives Matter’ Activist Interrupts Clinton Event: “Apologize For Mass Incarceration… I Am Not A Super-Predator”

A “Black Lives Matter” activist, …youth activist Ashley Williams, hoped to draw attention to statements made in 1996 by then-first lady Hillary Clinton about bringing black criminals “to heel” by holding up a large sign.

HILLARY CLINTON: I think we’ve got somebody saying [something] here, have you? “Bring them to heel?”
ASHLEY WILLIAMS, BLACK LIVES MATTER: We want you to apologize for mass incarceration. I’m not a super-predator, Hillary Clinton.
CLINTON: okay fine, we’ll talk about it.
WILLIAMS: Will you apologize to black people for mass incarceration?CLINTON: Well, can I talk, and then maybe you can listen to what I say. Fine. Thank you very much. There are a lot of issues in this campaign. The very first speech that I gave back in April was about criminal justice reform.
WILLIAMS: You called black people “Super-Predators.”
CROWD: You’re being inappropriate, that’s rude.
WILLIAMS: She called black people “super predators,” that is rude. CLINTON: Do you want to hear the facts or do you just want to talk?WILLIAMS: I know that you called black people “super predators” in 1994, please explain it to us. You owe black people an apology.
CROWD: That is inappropriate.
CLINTON: If you give me a chance to talk, I’ll come to your side… You know what! Nobody’s every asked me [this] before. You’re the first person to ask me and I am happy to address it.

At that point, Williams is gently removed from the building.
