WTF? The United Police Departments are creating a caste system with themselves at the top, suffering no consequences for all of the violent crimes they commit.

America’s debilitating addiction to the War on Drugs

Nixon’s domestic-policy adviser, John Ehrlichman, …revealed the true aim of the Drug War was to criminalize the administration’s “two enemies: the anti-war left and black people.”

…More than $1 trillion later, Nixon’s war has hollowed out urban black communities, [and] visited death upon downtrodden whites in rural America.

…Despite strides toward a more sane national drug policy, the deeper infrastructure of the War on Drugs remains fundamentally unaltered under Obama. Work focused on public health has not replaced paramilitary anti-trafficking efforts, known as interdiction, at home or abroad.

…Obama even carried over George W. Bush’s DEA chief, Michele Leonhart, who would refuse to admit, under House grilling in 2012, that marijuana is a less dangerous drug than crack cocaine.

…Despite the carnage, prohibitionist policies enforced through military interdiction and domestic incarceration have done little to curb the American drug habit. …[The Government Accountability Office] found that “none of the goals” of the Obama drug strategy have been met.

…On any given day in America, nearly 470,000 people are behind bars for drug offenses. That represents a fifth of the total incarcerated population of 2.2 million. …Nearly a quarter of the roughly 744,000 Americans now in jail – 184,000, according to the Sentencing Project – are locked up for drugs.

….For taxpayers, the Drug War imposes huge costs: nearly $55 billion a year. Harvard economist Jeffrey Miron …found state enforcement of drug prohibition – accounting for cops, judges, jails and prisons – costs more than $25 billion a year, with more than $5 billion spent fighting pot.

…As a result, the Drug War is costing taxpayers more than ever. Obama’s 2017 drug budget seeks $31 billion, an increase of 25 percent from when he took office.

No sign of weapon on woman shot to death by SF police sergeant – SFGate

A San Francisco police sergeant shot and killed a 27-year-old woman in a suspected stolen car Thursday. ….The Police Department’s current policy prohibits officers from firing at a moving vehicle except when an occupant is threatening the officer with “imminent danger of death or serious bodily injury,” and the officer has no way to retreat.

Of course there was no threat to the officers. And of course they decided to execute her for disrespecting them. It’s great the Chief resigned. Next step? Arrest, convict, and imprison the offending officers for Murder One.

Seems like mixed priorities to me. The cost of the changes are what now? So they can catch some kids with bikes? How about they use that money to prevent civilian and officer deaths by improving police training instead????

F.B.I. Director Says ‘Viral Video Effect’ Blunts Police Work – The New York Times

James Comey said he believed that “lots and lots of officers” were not engaging in confrontations with suspects out of fear of being videotaped.

If that is his position he is not qualified to lead let alone be emplyed in law enforcement. If cops are afraid to be caught doing something wrong in the course of going abut their job then they should stop doing things wrong, not stop doing their job. Anything else should be grounds for dismissal.

Obama commutes sentences of 58 non-violent drug convicts

“It just doesn’t make sense to require a non-violent drug offender to serve 20 years, or in some cases, life, in prison,” Obama said in a blog post.

Many of the convicts had been serving time for crack cocaine. Crack users have for years faced far steeper penalties than users of powder cocaine, even though the two substances are molecularly similar. Critics have said the disparity has unfairly hurt poor African-American communities.

Obama has pushed to reform the U.S. criminal justice system to reduce the number of people serving long sentences for such crimes, and it is one of the few issues for which the Democratic president has received support from Republican lawmakers.
