…Obama told Peter Hamby, who hosts a Snapchat political show “Good Luck America,” that those who use the slogan could jeopardize their goals of enacting meaningful reforms for police.
“You lost a big audience the minute you say it, which makes it a lot less likely that you’re actually going to get the changes you want done,” the former president said.

I always had a problem with the phrase “defund the police” because it sounds too alarming to most folks (esp down here in Texas), many of whom adore the cops. You want the broadest reach, you don’t go after the most polarizing idea. That’s as radical to most civilians as “defund the military” would be, even if we spend an atrocious amount, there’s hesitation because “we could go to war at any minute” (versus being constantly at war, yeah, I know).
Now, if they said “demilitarize the police,” that would make far more sense, but doesn’t fit on a placard as easily, I guess. And Defund is easier to spell. But “Defund” requires explanation, because someone’s gonna see that and just shut down. They won’t respond and will lash out because of fear. It’s like a bad joke, if you have to deconstruct it to explain why it’s funny, you’ve failed. If you have to deconstruct your slogan to explain why it’s important (and it takes a paragraph or more), then you’ve failed.
Hell, “de-fang the police” would’ve been a little better (especially with a picture of a police dog covered in riot gear and military-surplus weapons). Would’ve been easier to understand.
And because Dump’s supporters have such a short attention span and don’t wanna sit through explanations, they turn to their leader’s Tweets and nod along to his own interpretations of what things mean. Of course, it doesn’t help that EVERYONE’s patience and attention span seems to’ve taken a hit in this country the past few years, but the lack of clarity is killing Democrats. This needs to be approached before midterms and corrected big time.
