I’ve read in a few sources that one of the challenges in preventing the spread of HIV in that region is a persistent popular myth that you can cure the disease by having sex with a virgin. This belief is in turn is contributing to both the number of rapes and the spread of HIV. Rape is also a popular act of aggression during wartime in more than a few regions. Normally I’d think it’s a little extreme but given the circumstances I’m all for it.
Yes, it’s totally scary to think of angry ex’s armed with these contraptions but to picture it used that way instead of the way it is intended is to lose a little of the context of why the device why created in the first place. Context like the fact that 25% of the female S. African population can expect to be raped AT LEAST once in their lifetime and where a popular youth past-time is jackrolling, a.k.a gang raping.
