This campaign is a great idea…. Sort of.
As far as I understand it, all of the detailed explanation of how one checks their privilege is to not be a self-absorbed asshole. Truly, that is all there is to it.
On the other hand the tone of, “Check your privilege” is pretty self-absorbed and asinine. It’s like saying, “Hey! I want you to be nicer. Casting aspersions on you for things outside your control (like say, race, gender and the socio-economic status of your parents) while sounding holier than thou seems to me to be a great way to accomplish that. It’s basically the same behavior I’m trying to discourage but I’m engaging in it because I feel I’m better than the individuals I’m addressing. Besides, people always respond so well to crass generalizations that don’t reserve room for individual strengths, right?”
Why fuck can’t we just tell people not to be self-absorbed douches and respect other people’s individuality and leave the racial or whatever stereo-types out of it?
Because Liberals are only happy when putting others down, that’s why.
