In a Mississippi Jail, Convictions and Counsel Appear Optional

In a Mississippi Jail, Convictions and Counsel Appear Optional

...when Mr. Burks and others are arrested, steep and “arbitrary” bail amounts are set, with no consideration of a person’s ability to pay.

If a defendant applies for indigent defense, as Mr. Burks did on the day of his arrest in November, the senior circuit judge, Marcus D. Gordon, generally approves the request. But it is the judge’s policy not to appoint a public defense lawyer until a person is indicted. And there is no state law setting a time limit on detention before an indictment.

Legal experts said such circumstances were widespread, even if this was an extreme example. Steep bail amounts and long jail stays without access to a lawyer are particularly common for those charged with misdemeanors, said Alexandra Natapoff, a professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles.

Maui GMO Initiative, herbicides and the Rainbow Papaya

What is the Farming Ban? The Maui GMO Initiative, herbicides, and the Rainbow Papaya: Explained

No one on Maui, other than Monsanto, currently is growing genetically modified crops, specifically because it is copyright infringement to grow their crops. Therefore, the initiative would not impact anyone not directly working for Monsanto.

Importantly Douglas believes that CAMCFB is lying about the threat of job losses, because “they [Monsanto] can always switch to growing hybrid seeds.” Douglas added “that now that China and Russia have joined Europe, Australia and New Zealand and much of the rest of the world in banning or limiting GMO’s, the market for GMO crops has peaked.”

…Most modern GMO crops have been engineered specifically to be resistant to Glyphosate, so that the crops can be protected from weeds by spraying the whole field with Glyphosate.

According to some studies housed in the US National Library of Medicine, Glyphosate has also been linked to Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in occupations that deal with spraying Glyphosate, and to breast cancer, due to its impact as an “endocrine disruptor.” One study suggested that Celiac Sprue (or gluten intolerance) could possibly be a direct result of contact with Glyphosate.

….The nearby Leilani Estates were filled with “acres and acres of papaya.” One person there told him that the trees there had stopped producing, also because they had been impacted by pollen drift by the Rainbow Papaya. He also learned that the farmers had been told that they would have to pay for whatever papaya they produced. This is because the gene strain of the Rainbow Papaya is actually trademarked, thus making any Rainbow Papaya the intellectual property of the industry.

Holder and Obama, breaking the racial barrier as the nation’s top two law enforcement officers

As Obama Administration officials go, Holder is one of the better stand-outs.

Far from perfect, IMHO. Some of the stuff he gets a lot of praise for seem a little, well, um, part of his freaking job but again, that’s just in IMHO.

He’s better than a lot of them though. I appreciate that.

And being the guy who breaks that barrier is an accomplishment in itself, and not an easy road at that. I get that and I’m black these barriers have been smashed.

Now on to Justice System reform and restoring lost progress on civil rights.

Hey…  One can dream, right?
