There are some pretty obvious reasons why users on Zynga’s facebook games are dropping off that not a single reporter or analyst seems able to voice out loud.
We heard for two years how ‘players enjoy sending and receiving gifts.’ This story was repeated as gospel truth by every Zynga employee and spokesperson and used an explination of why those games were center more and more on the act of sending facebook requests. It was the justification of why the games starting insisting that it’s players advertise, errrr post, on each other’s page if they wanted to be able to play the game.
The turth is though no one ever liked having to send requests to friends to be able to play and no one ever said to themselves, “You know what would make this more fun? Hasseling all of my friends to the point of pissing them off and advertsing for this game on my wall? If I can really play without doing that? Even better!”
Yet this falsehood was accepted as such gospel truth that supposedly no one can understand why users are falling off. Um, perhaps because playing these games involves being an asshole and no one likes beong an asshole? At the same time that the games increased the intrusiveness and inconsidorateness necessary to play these games they demanded more access to people’s private information.
If the people at these companies truly do not understand why playership is dropping off they are so stupid that they should be locked in a home before they hurt themselves or others.
