Busloads of Syrian migrants reach Austria after Hungary provides transport – The Washington Post
Asylum-seekers were being given a choice of going to Vienna or …Germany. German officials have said they expect to take in up to 800,000 asylum-seekers this year, especially Syrian refugees.
“I had doubts because I thought they would take us to a camp in Hungary. I thought it was a trick,” she said.
…“I still don’t feel like I’m safe yet.”
…Germany Chancellor Angela Merkel on Saturday reiterated her nation’s offer, saying that “the right to political asylum does not have a limit on the number of asylum seekers.”
“As a strong, economically healthy country we have the strength to do what is necessary,” she told the Funke media consortium.
That’s Germany they are heading to. Germany. That’s where they’re going to be safe. Germany stepping up and flinging open the gate doors. Germany. Where my German grandfather went with his fellow Americans in WWII. Germany.
What amazing things can be done over the short span of a few generations. Sure humans have the ability to tear things down and destroy centuries worth of society, accomplishment, work and culture in a generation or two but look what else we can do in the same span of time. Given all of the propensity for tearing things down that exists out there it almost make it even more amazing to see the progress swing around and go forward. Germany. Amazing.
It’s a huge job, the logistics of settling that many people but of all the peoples in the world, Germany is nothing if not effectual. The power of Germany’s efficiency put to a humane cause? Awesome in so many ways.
(Oh, please let this be good. Please don’t fuck it up, Germany. Please don’t fuck it up.)
