Perhaps part of the public’s fascination with stories of devastation isn’t detached & heartless schadenfreude at all.

It is, afterall, one of the few times that we ever see normal people acting decently to each other in the media.

Perhaps a less sordid narrative is in fact what we’re after when we eagerly tune in to stories of other peoples’ troubles. We want to look for the helpers, just like Mr. Roger’s mother said we should.
