Politicians Plead: The Fifth Amendment Does Not Apply to Suspected Terrorists

A CNN talking head just looked out at me from the flat screen TV above the fireplace at Dunkin Donuts and said, “Terrorists? Do you think they have the right to remain silent? I don’t.”

Before I address her question a quick aside: How did Journalism become Editorialism? G’damn fucking assholes. Don’t tell me your uneducated and ill-considered opinion Kyra Phillips. You are a reporter. Report.

…And don’t tell me how you want this guy to burn in purgatory either. First off your imagery is wrong you ignoramus. Second? Leave God out of it you posturing fake.

On to her question…

The whole point of affording everyone in our justice system the same rights we would like afforded to us and our loved ones is to make sure that those rights continue to exist. If they cease to exist for some it is only a matter of time until they cease to exist for less and less people. Once you move that line it is no longer permanent. Our justice sytem is set up to protect the individual – every individual – so that those individuals who deserve the benefit of the doubt get it. Mess with the system and you remove that promise of innocent until proven guilty.

We need to give terror suspects their 5th amendment rights because the Constitution applies to all of us. That is what makes us better than the terrorists. We treat them better than they would treat us. If we lower ourselves to their level of spite and hatred it is a slippery slope from there.

We are Americans, not Soviet Communists or Fascists. We are better than those who would attack us. Part of the way we prove that is the way we value and follow our Constitution to the absolute letter of the law.
